Subject: sinkholes- anyone else have property concerns?
Ill admit, the recent news made me think twice about our property. Our foundation is 25 feet from a small running stream, there is a manhole cover in the front yard 15 feet from the house, and the neighbor remembers loads of construction debris being burried when the home was built. I havent heard of much sinkhole activity in my area except for one not too far away on a residential property a few years ago 25'wide and 25'deep. Considering having an expert give it a once over, wondering if anyone here has had any testing done?

I live in Western Pennsylvania- the only reason I'm not concerned about mine subsidence is because I live so close to a river. It's a major major concern around here.

Not necessarily the same as a sinkhole, but every once in a while a home basically gets leveled by an unmapped or improperly mapped mineshaft.

I have taken precautions and hung all of my furniture from the ceiling.

I live in Wisconsin and I think the ground is frozen about 10/12's of the year, so no real concerns here.

No big worries in Nebraska, other than a water main letting go, but those are usually fairly small sinkholes.

I was born in Florida, and I remember when I was about 3 or 4 my dad was digging a fence post hole and when he stuck the pole in the hole it just disappeared underground.  It freaked me out, and I used to have nightmares of getting sucked underground.  It'll still creep up now and again in dreams.

This explains so much...

I fixed many sink holes when I was in the construction industry.  Even an "expert" can't provide a definitive answer regarding whether there is one under your property that hasn't opened up yet.

Spend your money on a new tri bike instead.
