Subject: wait, *now* they're teaching abstinence?

An Ohio school board is expanding sex education following the revelation that 13 percent of one high school's female students were pregnant last year.

There were 490 female students at Timken High School in 2005, and 65 were pregnant, WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported. The new Canton school board program promotes abstinence but also will teach students who decide to have sex how to do so responsibly, bringing the city school district's health curriculum in line with national standards.

The board made the changes in a vote at its regular meeting Monday. The Rev. David Morgan served on a committee that developed the lesson plans. He said the new curriculum moves beyond the "Just Say No" approach. Health textbooks, older than some students, will be replaced. "If we had math books from 1988, reading books from 1988, as a parent, I would be furious," said Patty Rafailedes, a physical education teacher. The Ohio Department of Education doesn't require schools to provide sex education, particularly when it comes to using contraceptives. The state curriculum calls for venereal disease education, which often is taught along with nutrition and the effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. "Sex is more complex than the information about drugs and alcohol," said Bill Albert, a spokesman for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. "It is not a not-now, not-ever message."According to the Canton Health Department, statistics through July 2005 showed that 104 of the 586 babies born to Canton residents in Aultman Hospital and Mercy Medical Center had mothers between the ages of 11 and 19.

See, I always thought teaching abstinence to kids was crazy. I mean, if there's *one* thing kids know, it's how *not* to have sex.

The way I read that article is that they were teaching abstinence, but not birth control:

"The new Canton school board program promotes abstinence but also will teach students who decide to have sex how to do so responsibly, bringing the city school district's health curriculum in line with national standards."

and

"He said the new curriculum moves beyond the 'Just Say No' approach."

Did I miss something?

I read it the same way.  Man, pretty soon they may even cave in and teach evolution.

I bet you can trace half those pregnancies back to Dan Marino's trip to accept his induction into the NFL HoF.

one of the things i've learned in our toddler and pre-schooler classes is this. kids have a hard time with negatives. if you say 'don't take your hat off', most little kids will take their hat off...either because they didn't understand the negative, or because they want to test to see what happens if they do what you've told them not to do. its like the cookie in the cookie jar? if not, why not? if you say 'your hat stays on your head' then the child is more likely to leave the hat on (unless that child is fi, who never wants to wear a hat under any circumstances). same goes for 'don't hit your sister'. if she hits ella, i make a practice to say 'put your hands in your lap' while i figure out if ella is okay. if i say 'don't hit your sister', 9/10 fi will hit her again. my 5 year old doesn't go along with 'because i said so'...she wants information and understanding as to WHY something isn't okay to do or okay to do.

so, apply that to teens. if all we are telling them is 'don't HAVE SEX' what are they really hearing? HAVE SEX? or if not, why not? what is this big and yummy cookie i'm not supposed to eat? if you tell them that cookies might give them sore teeth or make them fat, and that picking their own peaches is okay, maybe they'll make a different choice. okay, the food analogy is not working.

Hearing sex ed be described like that make me question the American curriculum. Or maybe just Autumn...
