Subject: Route and elevation

I know that this was in the other thread, but it lookd like it was supposed to be fixed.  I just created My first route (It's the first time I've done anything outside training-wise sice the routes came up) and it tells me that there was a total elevation gain of 1965 ft.  I'm willing to give it a margin of error, and the elevation graph shows a total of about 99 feet, which is still off since I was just going around my own block over and over again, and it's flat as a pancake, but it's a lot closer.

Mind taking a look?

Hmmm...I thought we had it although this is pretty much the same bug.  I see the the 'bad elevation' happened only about 4 points away from your starting point where it jumped ~1875ft in one point.

Can you give me any details as to if you used the 'undo' button, the 'loop', 'clear' etc when you made it?

All of the above... I'm pathologically incapable of mapping a route correctly the first time. I can try it again with no loops and hopefully no undo or clear.

Okay so I did that and it looks a lot better.  It's interesting to note that 1865 ft is what the tool says it my height above sea level...

Actually I was hoping that you can repeat it incorrectly similiar to what you think you did the first time...this bug is being difficult to pin-down with all of the button choices and sequences to use.

Anyody else?  Looks like I will keep creating more testing routes to see what is doing this.

I'll try a couple more times to see if I can get it to do it again....  So far, now that I've asked about it, it is behaving normally.  I understand how that works tho....  Mechanic's Syndome.

Yup, I made one a few days ago (err, started to make one) and the elevation was way off, not to mention is wasnt graphing in the elevation graph either.  I stopped making the map since it was so off.

I had this happen today and it was frustrating.

I was in about the middle of mapping a 20 mile ride route - and the elevation was showing ~3000 ft which I KNOW was wrong.  I HAD hit the undo button a couple of times to go back, and for some reason the little green dots were still on the map even though the green connecting line was gone.

I did not hit any other buttons besides UNDO and my map is set to re-center on a double-click.  Maybe it had something to do with how close together the points were?  When I re-did it trying to stay farther away from the last point, the problem disappeared.  (At the same point the elevation was approx 900)

Anyway, I cleared the whole thing and started over and that seemed to work ok, except that when I went to save my route, it just disappeared entirely.  The save screen came up and I filled it out, but when I clicked save the route was not on the list of available routes.  That was really weird.

Some days you should just not even try.

This seems to be because of the timing of the way the Undo button works with the elevation service. A lot of this has been/ is being changed in the next version. Google's added some key functionality to their Maps API since this first version of the Route Tracker was created that will be a big help in this area and I've also learned a lot about using the different web services efficiently since then.

In the mean time, the best way to avoid this is seems to be to click slowly, don't add or delete a lot of points all at once, and if you do run into problems reload the whole page by hitting F5 rather than Clear Map.
