Just watched your profile video - you are a hero! That was awesome! My friend Vicky did this last year for her first ever Tri as well and LOVED it. She did it with her friend Sunday. Vicky felt great the whole race but her friend was struggling especially on the bike (HEAVY junky bike). They stayed together through it all. They both lost weight training and Vicky is planning on doing it again. Though she was happy to bike and run with Sunday she wants to see how well she can do this year. |

I don't know about hero, just decided I wanted something bad enough to work for it, but I appreciate your kind words, and I'm glad you liked the video. It was fun to put together. I had a heavy bike, too, and this year I'm coming back with an actual road bike. I'm going back to see how well I can do this year, too! I came in 207/217 so I'm hoping I've improved! Ha ha. Send Vicky my best! |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() To anyone who has done this, how "big" a deal is this "hill"? begin a .25 mile, grade 6 climb back to and re-enter Alum Creek State Park. I see "climb" and get paranoid. I'll need as much of my legs as possible! I'm by Polaris a lot, I guess I could be brave and go *look*, eh? This will likely be my first tri. I really wanted to do the Coffman YMCA one in May, but I'll need the extra month+ to prepare. Running just isn't coming. ![]() |

I actually thought I'd done more, but my records reflect otherwise. In the weeks preceding the race, I biked 2.5 miles three times, 7 miles once, and 13 miles twice and I didn't have to stop on the hill race day. Of course, I live in a town called Hillsboro, so training on hills did help some, but the hill is not nearly as bad as the one at Deer Creek. If you get a chance, just go ahead and take some time and ride the course. It's really not that bad. Let me know if you have anymore questions. I love talking this stuff. - Lora |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() k_watzek - 2009-03-25 8:26 PM I'm going to be riding the course on Sunday if anyone is interested ![]() What time? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh, I'd love to join you, but if my mom doesn't come into town, I was thinking about driving over to the MU course since it's coming up sooner. Let us know when you might be doing it again... |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() !!!!!!!!!!!! I think riding the MU course might be a better idea.....let me know when you want to go.
Otherwise, I'll ride the Tri Cure rout on 11am on Sunday am. |

![]() | ![]() At this point I'm doing a pancake ride tomorrow- maybe next weekend we can ride the course?? I'm torn between driving 2+ hours to ride a few miles...or just doing some hill work here in cowtown and saving on gas. |

New user![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, this will be my first tri, and I am REALLY getting nervous about the details...transition, what to wear and more. I was wondering if you think it will be necessary to wear a wetsuit for this race? |
|
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() I've been swimming in Alum creek for the past two weeks- I don't think a wet suit is necessary. BUT I am also a strong swimmer. A wet suit will help you keep more buoyant in the water and ergo save energy- i think it's up to you if you want to wear one or not- just remember NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY. Make sure you practice swimming in one! For what to wear you have several options:

New user![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks, I feel I'm a pretty strong swimmer, but have yet to get out for an open water swim...something I plan to do at least a couple times before the race. I usually train in running shorts and some light weight top. I was thinking of wearing bike or compression shorts and a sports bra and then throwing on a top over that for the bike and swim portions. I'm not putting much $ into anything until I know if I want to do this again. I'll just be riding the bike I have which is a hybrid. I just hope to finish this one and we'll go from there ![]() |

I backstroked the whole thing, but I made it through OK. I was really concerned about freezing. It had thunderstormed the three days before and I thought I'd freeze. The water temperature was surprisingly very pleasant - and I get cold VERY easily. Check out my video with pics from last year's event. That'll help give you some ideas of what the area will look like at least. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?albumid=9266. Feel free to drop me a Private Message if you have any more questions or you can post them on here, of course. Be sure to look for me on race day as well. If you check out my pictures here, there's one of me in a trisuit http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/view-profile.asp?action=view&uid=76306hat's which is what I'll be wearing, so don't hesitate at all to come up and introduce yourself. It's a very easy course and the women are great. You're not alone! |
