I'm doing this race, and I'm so excited about it! This will be the fourth race I do, and even though my training for it has been rather subpar, I feel more ready due to my three race experience. I'll be doing this race with some friends, and that makes it even more exciting.

Who else is doing this race? Any advice for newbies on the course? I hear that the Potowatami trails are rough. Any advice? For example, should I use my new fancy race shoes on that course, or should I save them for a race that won't ruin them? On the bike, I'm familiar with the road that the bikes take... but it looks full of potholes. Is that how the course is for the majority too? Is it windy as well? Any other tips about the course so that I practice those things? I'll have to get to the trails before the race. I hear a lot about them.

Any advice would really help! Or any comments on the race as well.

It's a great race that I am considering doing for the third year. The roads are poor for the bike. The key will be to run the trail. I have been running 6-10 mile runs up until Tuesday when I finally got to the trail. Not only did I have a near miss on a bad ankle sprain but I was sore for two days after only a 4.3 mile run.

I'll be back out there for a run Wed or Thur. if anyone cares to join.

In like flynn!

I am going to do the du this year.  I've done the tri the previous four years, but my BFF wants to know what racing this shiznit is like, so there you are.

I wouldn't wear nice spiffy new shoes on this course, especially if there's rain beforehand.  I think I've done a face plant in dirt each year, haha.  No matter how much I look where I'm going, theres always a root that grabs my ankle.

Anyhoo, the bike course is full of potholes, but nothing you can't bump over/ride around.  It's a fairly tree-lined course, so there is never much wind.

My BFF and I, coincidentally also named Andrea and also with reddish colored hair, will be voluntreering AGAIN. This is becoming our signature now.  We lay claim to the turn at Mile 9.  This will be year 3 or 4 for us at the same locale.

We are complete lunatics, cowbells in hand and are gonna try to rustle up some tunes this year.

I originally scoped this race before my first ever tri to "see how it's done" and then started volunteering.  Too much fun.....

And yeah, I'm a still a bit ascared of the pothole filled road  / trail run. (says the maniac about to do a HIM in 3 weeks)

HA!  I have a vague recollection of that!  I didn't even know you then.

I expect cat calls and whistles this year!

So yes, I'm in.

If your spiffy new shoes have drain holes in them, like zoots, stick to a nice supportive trainer or trails shoe.  Zoots would get all sorts of sand in them.  Socks are worth the extra ten seconds to me too.

That's all great advice!

Perhaps I shouldn't have taken signing up for this race so lightly. Running is my weakness by a lot. I was has hoping that the bike part wasn't as bad as I know the roads usually are (I drive on those roads once a month). I guess I'll have to go and bike the course a few times before the race to see how to navigate the potholes.

I'll also wear my old training shoes. And put in a pair of socks for good measure. And apparently, get running up hills more.

Is the bike hilly as well? And how is the swim marked? What the the chances that it is wetsuit legal?

wetsuit legality is more than 50%, I think, and the way this year is going so far, it will be legal.  I have seen it non-legal once, and the temps were pretty high the few days before.  If memory serves, the swim is a long rectangle extending out from the beach.

The bike is rolling with one, maybe two, good sized "hills".

Hmmm...looks like a lot of folks doing this one.  Anyone interested in a non-organized, random, coincidental get together to run the bike and run course on Sunday 5/31?  Preferably late morning or early afternoon to give us some time to get out that way?  I need my legs to remember what those hills felt like...

If you have a choice in wheels, leave the good ones at home.  I rode this course a few weeks ago and the roads were beyond bad for at least the last half of the bike course.  Hopefully the county has been in the area to fill some of the holes if you hit one they'll chew you up and spit you out on your ar$e.

I'd really love to do a run on the course before the event...hopefully Saturday or Sunday (if Sunday...early afternoon), even Monday morning would work. Anyone available that knows the trail? The last thing I want to do is get lost and turn a 5 mile run into a 15 mile loop.

I'm doing the Ann Arbor tri...my second tri ever! My first will actually be one week before this one at Hawk Island. I'm totally terrified of both!

The moon-crater bike course especially has me concerned. I'm thinking I'll be bringing my backup bike with my bomb-proof trainer wheels...

If anyone is doing a run through of the course, let me know!

Oh come on, its not THAT bad.  Has it gotten a lot worse than last year?  It was rough, but I wasn't worried about damaging a wheel.

Come to think of it, I do remember a guy riding on tom of a flat tubbie with about 5 miles to go.  I told him that he was flat.  He told me that he would be faster riding it, than changing it.

I too am doing this one this year. It will be my first time there, but I have talked to some folks who have done it for the past few years. They love it and say by far the biggest concern is the trail run and not the roads. They claim I will be walking at some point, my goal is to prove them wrong.

I would be up for meeting someone for a slow run through the trails, maybe this weekend morning preferably. (I run 10min miles at my best)

Walking is part of trail running races, so don't beat yourself up over it.  On the 5 mile loop there are some uphill spots that you'll most likely be forced to walk because others in front of you are walking and there's no where to pass.

I took the route from mapmyride.com, so I assume I was on the right route, I was coming from the Chelsea area and shortly after heading easterly on the route I had from Unadilla area, the road went from decent to crap.  I didn't ride the section of North Territorial from Hankerd to Hadley.  I've never been on it before, but have hit half moon lake while doing trail runs on the poto, so I passed the beach area.

There were numerous pot holes and I can't even imagine riding this route with large groups of people.  Of course the benefit of it is that drafting will be enforced by the drafter hitting a hole and trashing his bike.  You better keep your head in the game on this ride.

Ok.  Let's pretend that I don't know anything about the Poto, other than rumors that it exists.
Let's also pretend that I will go and practice on it at least once before THE day.

I have a map of the trails at Pinckney State RA, but the Poto is listed as a 17 mile trail, and the CROOKED LAKE trail is 5.1 miles... is it really the Crooked Lake trail?  Or am I missing something?  And where would be the "correct" place to start?  The beach off of Silver Hill Rd?

I'm already lost

You'll want to start from the Half Moon Lake parking area and the run is a modified version of the Crooked Lake trail...most of it is the same, but you are on some dirt roads instead of the full loop.  Looking for a map online for you....  I feel like we've printed one out in past years so we didn't get lost (and inevitably still took a wrong turn).

And Yorkee...I think that 5/31 is the only day we'll have free to train out there, so it's cool if it's just me and Eric...we're out of town this weekend, and both of us are working on 5/30.

Thank you, Cheryl,

You are a ROCKSTAR!

Tomorrow (Thursday, 5/21) I'm planning on being out "there" to run what I am hoping will be the right trail (Poto-ish).
I may have convinced one of my neighbors to go, too.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping to be out there between 6:00 and 6:30, and I may have wife and kids playing at the park (??), who knows.

Anyway, if anyone thinks they might enjoy watching me suffer, tomorrow might be an opportune moment!

To add to my rockstar-ness...I give you this drawing.  I checked with the race director to see if they had a better map and he gave me this pdf of a drawing...it makes me laugh, but it's actually pretty clear where you have to go.  To get started on the run, just cross Hankerd from the parking lot drive and the trail starts there.  The label that looks like "Triple Die Bungy Hill" is the worst climb on the run...I think those topo lines are pretty accurate!   I wanna say it's between mile 1 & 2.

Have fun!  Wish we could join you!
