Subject: bitten by the tri-bug...need a bike

I am a newbie and have been bitten hard by the tri bug! I have been training a bit for the past month and have decided that I want to bite the bullet and buy a nice but NOT TOO EXPENSIVE bike to ride. I used to race mtn bikes and know that you can spend a fortune. I am hoping to keep my costs down to less then $2000, but will spend more if the right ride comes along. Please let me know what bike you think is the best for this price and what type of components should I be looking for...thanks for any and all help...I am so very fired up....but it is hard to think about even signing up for a race until I have a decent road bike and a some saddle time would be good, too! Thanks for any and all help! If anyone has a good used bike, I am 5'6" and 170-180 weight. look forward to hearing from you! very anxious to get riding!

Under $2000 is a pretty big range. No matter what you get, make sure you check out cervelos at your lbs. New, look at the 2008 P2 SL, for used or an older model that your lbs couldn't get rid of, look at the P2C or even a discontinued model they ended in 2007 called the Cervelo Dual.

I am going to tell you what I tell everyone else.  Check out Bikesdirect.com.  for $2K you can probably get a full carbon road bike or for $1K a tri bike with full Dura Ace.   You might want to start cheap like I did and spend $300-$400 though.  I bought a motobecane mirage sport for $350 and have just over 2500 miles in a year + and it served me will in 6 or 7 races (averaged almost 22mph in my oly, remember it is more about the engine than the bike).  You want to me sure you like the sport before dropping serious $$$.  That is why there are so many bikes on ebay for cheap, someone bought the bike and a month later no more riding.

No matter what you do make sure the bike fits and have fun.

2000 will get you a lot of bike I would shop the LBS and see what they have on clearance or special and get a good idea on what size you will need.  I have a Motobecane Nemesis Pro you can find it on bikesdirect.com 1195 delivered then spend 100 at the LBS for fitting and use the rest for shoes, helmet, bike computer, pedals, bike shorts and tops ect.  the cash can go fast and there is more than just the bike get.  If you are planning on riding in a group (local bike club) then get a road bike not a Tri bike and put clip on areobars.  Bikesdirect has some real nice ones but always give the LBS a chance to get close to the price.

Don't shop for a bike, shop for a bike fit. Get an LBS that knows all brands and geometries, get them to fit you, then tell you which bike will work for you. Then apply your price point.

Anyone can get a deal on a bike to keep it under $2k. Not everyone with a $2k bike is on the right bike, and it costs time and comfort. Get a bike fit.

Quintana roo has some nice womens specific tri bikes that would be worth checking out. An alumin and a carbon. Felts S22 is sweet, also comes with there alloy races style wheelset! Kestral talon is a very nice bike under 2k.

Agree 100% 200%! Go to a shop and get fit FIRST! THEN talk to knowledgable people and test ride LOTS of bikes. But FIT always comes before bike (except in the dictionary).

If it does not fit, you must not sit.
