Subject: Newbie question

I plan on doing my first triathlon in October and I have a quick question, is it okay to compete in basketball type shorts and tank top for all 3 circuits? its a sprint series. Thank you.

It's gonna be very hard to swim in that. Get a pair of cheap jammers or even compression shorts (not swim trunks) and throw on some shorts and a top for the bike/run. You don't need to be tricked out in spandex but swimming in regular clothing is not a good idea. Wet clothing is heavy and it will slow you way down, not to mention get all tangled up. There are lots of different options do this on the cheap, if that's your intent. But don't swim in basketball shorts.

You can, but you will get some rubbing since they will be wet the entire time. However, if that is your only option, then go for it.

performancebike.com or nashbar.com. Lots of cheap gear. Keep in mind that you can't be naked in transition (so no swapping shorts), and that it might be hard/uncomfortable to swim/run in bike shorts if the padding is really thick.

REI has got some of thier Tri stuff on clearence. I'm lucky enough to work 2 blocks from one and happend to snag a Sugoi Oxygen Tri suit for $75 (reg. $130).

The one here in Dallas was pretty depleted but it was all on sale. Their website has some good deals on some Tri shorts/jammers too.

Just an FYI

I'm guessing that OP was not interested in spending $75, even for a good deal.  You can get cheap tri shorts (made from s/b/r) for around $15-$20.  I got a pair on sale for $12.95 last month.  They aren't great compared to my (much more expensive) Orca's, but they get the job done.

If you can't or don't want to buy anything for the race, a pair of good fitting board shorts/swim trunks will be better than bb shorts.
