Subject: Aussie Men - No Gold!

If it were not for the Australian Women then we would have no gold at all!! (Apologies to the 470 Class sailing...) I mean at Sydney and at Athens the Aussie men tore it up in the pool and in the rowing and on the velodrome. This year... squat! And I don't see any Gold coming from the men either. The only possible exception is the men's hockey team... but based on this olympics.... I'm convinced that they are cursed. How many silver could have been, and previously have been, Gold?!

C'mon Aussies, am I alone here?

I LOVE the women :p

I think its nice that maybe some more focus will be put on womens sport down under for awhile... I think its been a long time since women were getting the same recognition as the men across the board (AFL, NRL all dominate) so maybe its not such a bad thing?

Couldn't agree more Cat. And I certainly didn't want to detract from the stellar performance of the girls. They have been amazing and the positive outcome will be that the spotlight is fairly and squarely on them. They deserve every ounce of admiration they receive. I just cannot comprehend how little the return has been from the guys this olympics....

Didnt a couple of the mens rowing teams exceed expectations, the sailors (yes i know you didnt really count them), and even though they didnt get gold you know some of the swimmers couldnt have tried any harder... (there is just no one like Thorpe on the team at the moment)

I think the biggest disappointments have been in the velodrome... The Aussies just dont seem to be as strong as usual...

But also Australia is a country of 20 million, China is a country of 1.3 billion.... I think based on that the Aussies are doing very well!   I wonder if maybe the Aussies just expect SO much in comparison to their resources? Really on that basis its still a phenomenal achievement for both the men and the women!

I was watching Aus - Montenegro water polo today, the Aussies tied but it wasn't enough to move on. I was just surprised that Aus. was ranked 10th in water polo, such an aquatic sports-centered country, good swimmers, some big guys.

Snowsill's hot though, so thanks for her

Don't get me wrong. I'm not bagging the athletes themselves I am sure that they are giving till it hurts, and them some. And yes, on a per capita basis we are top two in Gold medal performnce. I think that there are some countries that would envy our results considering our relatively small population. (Yes, England and Canada I'm looking at you )

I'm just amazed that in events we have traditionally performed very well in we have been left wanting this time around. I guess I'm really referring to the pool and the velodrome.

I think the mens team is definatley missing thorpe in the pool.... but it is nice that there is such a broad range I guess... I know what you mean though... its very diferent to Athens!!!

Not sure whats going on at the velodrome... with the exception of maybe Anna Meares (who is coming back from a neck injury but still in the competition) they havent seemed to be up to the standard I would expect... Although their team pursuit effort in the bronze medal race was pretty good!  (even though they didnt get it)

You are right... I think the Aussies were expecting a few more medals.. that havent happened...

I think the aussie men are def under expectations for these olympics.  Not sure if the expectations were unwarranted or what.

but the aussie girls are just brilliant!  some unexpected performers too.    I think Sally McLellan is awesome just to make the hurdles final tonight!  Can't wait to watch that.

I really hope they celebrate whatever result she gets.

I'm really so annoyed at the coverage,  Silver Medals are an awesome achievement.  why does channel 7 feel the need to make the rowers or the swimmers with a silver feel like they have let the country down!  grrrr it makes me angry.

oh and the Tamsyn lewis interview was disgraceful.   sorry that was a bit off topic.

back on topic with Go the Girls!!! thats got to be good for girls and sport in this country!

I agree. Pat should hang his head in shame. He pushed that way too far. Sometimes I think the media try to create issues to keep the story going for days.
