I'm scheduled to do my first half ironman this weekend (Patriots Half in Williamsburg).  The forecast is for Tropical Storm Hanna to hit the area right about race time with heavy rain and high winds (35+ MPH).  Any tips for racing in tropical storm conditions (other than HTFU)?  I've yet to race a tri in rainy conditions (I've been lucky so far).  Perhaps some of you who did Lake Placid this year might have some suggestions.  Thanks for any advice!

More than likely they will cancel/postpone the race.  I would try and get ahold of the race director and see what their plans are for such an event.

It rained almost all day at Lake Placid, but was not tropical storm force winds or even close to that.  We all just sucked it up and continued on.

I had sooooo much fun running in Tropical Storm Fay when she blew through Florida.

40 mph winds, rain beating me in the face, perfect temperature, splashing in puddles, people looking at me like I was CRAZY

But, it would be kinda difficult swimming & riding in those conditions.

Hopefully Hanna will blow on by you!

Running in the storm does not really concern me, and neither does the cycling too much (although I suspect it would slow me down considerably).  I do wonder what the high winds would do to the water.  I guess the answer is to hope Hanna steers clear of the area until after the race, trust that the race director would not put us in the water if it is too dangerous and HTFU and forge ahead!

Thanks for the input - raceday should be interesting to say the least!

Hope your weather cooporates... Selfishly that would mean the weather (should) be better for my race here in S. Florida on Sunday. Then again there are two more storms headed this way so I am a weather channel nut until race day. Now mine is just a sprint so rough seas do not bother me as much for short race. However if it was a 1/2, then I might reconsider even if Race Director doesn't.

I figure if race goes on, everyone is under same conditions so regardless of times (which will be slower) the placing in AG etc should be relevent. How many people actually train in TS conditions anyway? Running in it, sure. The Bike and Swim though would be discouraging at best. I know what a 20 mile headwind does to my morale on the bike, let alone 30-40mph.

Good luck!

I'm sure the race director will play it very conservatively...

If you look at the set up website it looks like they are "several plans" depending on what the weather brings (or hopefully doesn't bring....)..

I'm in the same boat for a HIM up in Rhode Island on Sunday.  40-50mph winds are the current prediction, and on the Beafort scale, that's enough to down signs and branches, so I can't imagine that they are going to hold the race is this is the case.  I would like to know what's going to happen to my $145 entry fee though!
