Subject: Race Shoes?

So I'm thinking of getting a pair or race shoes. My training (and race shoe) right now is the Saucony Omni Progrid. I tend to overpronate so I need that support in my training. Will I have problems or discomfort in a race shoe without that added support?

What about for longer distances? Do people typically run longer distances (1/2 mary, full mary) in race flats? Also do you train at all in them or just trust that they will be comfortable on race day?

Any recommendations for me would be helpful too.

 Thanks!

I use Mizuno Wave Ronin up to the 1/2 Mary distance with very little training in them.

I wouldn't run a marathon in a flat that just sounds painful.

I use Brooks T5s up to a 1/2 mary.  After that I use Asics Gel-Banditos.

Ill use them in training during intervals or just a few runs to make sure everything is good with them.

I have no idea if the lack of support will affect you. That may be something to discuss at the running shoe store.

I'm somewhat of a neutral runner - a bit of supination. My main training shoe is the Nike Pegasus. For long distance races I use the Adidas AdiZero Mana, short races I wear Brooks T3 Racers. Both of these shoes are much lighter than the Pegasus. The Brooks has almost no support, while the Adidas has slightly more, but still not much.

I wear the shoes a few times prior to racing, but not for any kind of regular training. For me, sticking to the regular heavier shoe for training, then wearing the light racing shoe for racing makes me feel as if I can fly - even though I'm not really all that fast.

Thanks for the reply's. So I gathered that racing flats are for shorter distance races up (not including) half marathons.

If you've never worn them, they take getting used to.  I would recommend mixing them into training runs, and keeping it shorter and easy.

My idea of racing flats is the old Nike waffle racers.  But there are lightweight shoes for racing marathons.

Look into the Zoot Ultra Tempo+ - designed for mild pronators but is a superb shoe for triathlons and designed specifically around the sport:

I use Zoot shoes now for my tri racing and Saucony Fastwitch II's for running races, even up to a marathon distance.  These are not super thin track flats though, they are more moderate to light cushioned road racing shoes.

I train in the Asics DS trainers(fairly light them selves)

Then I raced in the DS racers, which was such a perfect shoe.. I wish they didn't stop making them. I still use them for 5ks, but they are getting worn. Now I'm starting to swap in my Asics Warp Speed racing flats.
You would want to do some training in them, but not too much to avoid injury.

For me I would have no problem doing a half marathon in my flats. This can change from person to person by alot, so don't take that for much.

For example I know someone who only races in the DS Trainers, but it's not enough support for him during training. While for me that what I train in and I get 550 miles out of the shoes normally.
