Subject: Post-Ironman phase

I have read several threads on this topic but I want to put here my experience too.

I did my first Ironman 4 weeks ago after having done 2x HIM in the season.

It went ok, nice experience and the following days I felt great, no big pains like a post marathon.

Today I can tell you that the post-ironman feelings came after 4-5 days and it gave me a very bad and strange effect. Always tired, mentally exhausted and never wanted to train.

After 2 weeks I tried to go in a 10k race, hilly and it was terrible. Even if my body, my legs were ok, I did high 38' while I can do below 36' easy. After 5k I wanted to stop because I had bad feelings...

I did anyway some track workouts to keep my shape up but still my times on running are really bad. I can not believe that the Ironman race destroyed completely my running form, making me loosing 2-3mins over 10k!

I did 1x or 2x swim per week and I can't think on getting back on the saddle.

I am afraid to loose my triathlon shape...what do you think?

Remember you were training for a long haul not a speedy 10K..   so you might see some drop off there.

I wouldn't worry about loosing to much fitness.  Plus it's your body and mind saying we are tired of this, rest, relax, try some thing different like a 4 hour mountain hike or something like that.

I'm 9-10weeks  post IM and did a 5K TT and bike TT to see what my pace and watts were over last two days.

My 5K time was 3 minutes longer and I lost 29 watts on  my bike TT.

IM is hard on your body not just race day but training for it. I'm racing cyclocross until December and then will start back training to get back what I lost in January and a light month of rest/break from training. I was surprised how slow I was in both bike/run.

I know it will come back but I need to let my mind and body fully recover before they will be ready to build towards the next one.

By the way, fantastic IM!  Have you done a full marathon before?  You just swam 2.4mi, 112 on a bike, and a marathon.  I have yet to do a whole IM, but I have done a number of marathons.  I can tell you, if I put it out there in a marathon, in two weeks I am not mentally ready or physically recovered.  Don't rush it too much, enjoy the warm glow of your successful race.  The body will come around.  Again, great job in that race.

Yes, I did 7 marathons before but never had more than 1 week recovery. After 2 weekends usually I could race again with excellent pacing. Nothing lost.

Everything is cyclical.  You can't keep peak fitness forever.  You should expect to gain and loose fitness throughout the year.

I did my first Ironman about 5 weeks ago and it wasn't until about 3 weeks after the race that my legs didn't feel like bricks whenever I'd try to run.  I took the first week completely off and then slowly dipped back into running, but haven't had the motivation to get back on the bike or in the pool.

I didn't anticipate it taking this long to fully recover from the Ironman.  I set PRs in the marathon and 1/2 marathon during training but I'm afraid to time myself now since I'm sure I've lost speed.

I'm sort of in the same boat. Not really motivated to train etc. But I know its better to take a break and loose a little bit of fitness than to keep on grinding into the winter and not come out fresh for next year. Plus its impossible to maintain peak form as I'm sure you know for a long period of time. Just relax do some hiking, find other means of training/ exercise.

Let your mind heal and you'll come back strong.
