Subject: Indoor trainer advice...
hi guys,
I'm doing residency training right now and usually have to be at the hospital by 6-6:15 ish, so i'm probably going to have to do some 4 am bike rides if i know i'm getting home late from work. I'm going to go for it and plunk some money down on an indoor bike trainer, and was wondering which ones have been good buys. i'm hoping to spend $150-250 dollars, maybe splurging farther down the line for the fancier ones that you can hook up to a computer. Any advice?

thanks

gabe

Generally, the cheaper they are, they are more noisy. If you need to be quiet and might wake people in your house at 4am, might be better to try get a fluid one not a fan

Hey man saw your post and thought I would give you my 2 cents.  I looked at trainers for at least a month trying to decide what to get and finally just bought the $125 trainer from Performance Bike.  Its a fluid trainer and fairly quiet other than the noise the bike makes with the wheel turning.  I got the $12 wheel block for the front wheel and I havent had any problems knock on wood.  I am glad now that I didnt spend $300 - $400 on one that will basically do the same thing but maybe last a bit longer.  If this one breaks or starts leaking I could still just buy a new one and still have spent less than the pricey ones.
Good luck with the training and your residency!

This was about 2 years ago, but I bought a Blackburn Fluid trainer. It is quiet and easy. it doesn't have any fancy bells and whistles or computer hookup, but it is a solid, stable indoor trainer and I think I paid about $125 for it.

Not sure what model my trainer is (I'm at work now) but I have to manually adjust the resistance which is not ideal as the lowest resistence is too easy (I run out of high gears) and the next setting is too hard (I can't spin at high cadence in lowest gear), so I have to get off the bike to adjust it during my workout.  Mine was also the cheapest the LBS had.

I'd get  one that you can remotely adjust the resistance while seated on the bike rather than going just for the cheapest you can find.

Get the angry badger and be done with it. That's what's sitting in the other side of my rec room and of more than a few other BTers:

It's an excellent trainer and it's just at about 100 less than you'll find it anywhere else. Call them and ask about it. They cannot advertise what brand it is but they'll tell you over the phone.

I have several differennt trainers at my house, including cycleops fluid, kurt kinetic and a cycleops Magneto.

By far, the best and quietest trainer is the cycleops Magneto (note, not magnetic). It is also about $75-100 cheaper than the fluid models. I highly reccomend it.

Skip the trainer, spend the money on a good headlight system and ride outdoors....its summer.

When you can splurge on a computer-based trainer (big $'s no doubt), the Computrainer is a good choice, as is the Taxc Fortius (I-Magic, too). There is a third brand, name escapes me, but is advertised in Performance Bike (I think)....
