Pre-race routine:

got up around 6am to do some pre-race yoga, but then fi woke up and wanted mama. after the girls were both up, we had some oatmeal (and i had some coffee - i was tired this morning!). loaded up the double jogger and headed to the race start.
Event warmup:

there were almost 4000 people doing the 10k, plus 5k races, 2k walkers and runners, spectators, etc., so our event warm up consisted of finding parking and weaving our way through the crowds to find a quiet place for me to stretch. did a little stretching and before i knew it, they were calling folks to line up for the 10k start. as luck would have it, i actually saw my brother in the starting line (he wasn't sure if he was going to run after all, since there was some family stress this week, but he came after all). looked for ian, but how to spot a brit amid 4000?

Comments:

felt pretty good through the whole run. was able to talk with my brother easily through the first 3 miles. i had hoped to keep my pace slower for the first half (zone 3ish) and then kick it up the last three. worked out well since my brother's pace is just a hair slower than mine, and ian's is faster (he was passing me at about mile 4 when we recognized each other...and he left me in the dust at the end! :) ). my pace probably would have been faster in the first half if it had been less CROWDED! i was passing people and getting stuck behind packs of people throughout the whole race, but it was especially bad the first few miles.
What would you do differently?:

do some more stretching. start further up in the pack at the start.
Post race
Warm down:

searched for my husband and kids...watched for my brother (he was only a few minutes behind me finishing in 59:22). should have done some stretching, but i didn't. we headed out to lunch. will have to do some yoga tomorrow to help workout any tension in my muscles.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

crowded race. can't really say running with my brother limited my speed, since i was hoping to speed up in the last three miles anyway...but i probably would have gone a little bit faster than we were going. starting at the back of the pack was a problem too, since i had to pass SO many people. a few would have been good for morale, but this was ridiculous.

Event comments:

it was a fun race, but too crowded for my taste. by the time i found my husband and kids, and my brother, the line for the food was insanely long, so we just left. not a lot for the kids to do either.

other ranking: for women overall: 553/1732
1st man: 30:00; 1st woman: 33:54;. 1st in f30-34: 35:56.

hr monitor is still acting wacky. my hr for the first couple miles was around 70. um, no, i don't think so. ignored it the rest of the race since i was running with peter or ian most of the time anyway. at the end, it gave my minimum as 56 and my max as 199. again, doubtful on both ends. battery must need replacing. did the first 3 miles with peter in 28.32 (9.30 pace), then ran ahead. did most of the last 3.2 miles alone or with ian in 27.45 (8.40 pace).
Course: along both sides of the mississippi on the river roads, crossing at lake/marshall and ford pkwy bridges. starting and ending at minnehaha park. flat, paved roads.

Well done Autumn! When you said that you loaded up the double stroller I really thought you were going to run with it! A great race and a great time - well done!

finally put some pictures up. wish i would have gotten a picture with ian and/or my brother. bill tried to take pictures of us at the start, but with nearly 4000 people, it was tough. he tried though! you can take a look at lots and lots of runners here: http://www.fidean.net/pix/getingear10k/getingear10k.html

Great race, Autumn!  Crowded races are what they are.... I find them frustrating because you spend the first couple of miles trying to jockey around people and the last miles trying to make up for lost time... but I do enjoy the camraderie of it.  Sounds like you made the best of it, though!

Great job Autumn! A sub 60 minute 10k? Soooo jealous Think about it, did that even seem like a possibility when you started running last year? Awesome improvement.
