Subject: Warm Water Swim
Hey All,

Just finished my second triathlon Saturday. Had a blast and enjoyed it for sure, but a few "lessons to be learned" from the experience as well.

In transition 1, I got caught up quite a bit. I put on my shoes, then pulled a pair of running shorts over my tri shorts (mistake 1) which got caught on my shoes and cost me at least 30 seconds. Then I pulled on my shirt for the bike and run. When putting on my shirt i tore the safety pin through the race number and had to re-pin.

All in all I think problems in T1 cost me 1+ minute. I am now no longer worried about running in tri shorts. I will never again pull shorts over my tri shorts, but know that I want a shirt on for the 2nd and 3rd leg.

So, I guess this is my question. In a warm water swims, should I wear a one piece suit (or wear a tri shirt in swim) to save time in T1? Or will the extra drag slow down my swim too much? (No wetsuits in Florida warm waters). Or should I continue to pull on my shirt in T1? Trying to save as much time as possible, seeing as every second counts in these Sprints. Thanks for any advice folks!

Rahoolio

I would recommend either a tri top or a compression shirt. Either of those will dry quickly and will not be much more drag than nothing.

In any case, you're not going to create more drag than you lose trying to put a dry shirt on a wet body

+1

My 1st tri a struggled with to put a top on my wet bod.  For next tri I wore a tight tri top for the entire event to save T time.  Noticed no difference with top during swim.  I'm slow either way

Get a race belt. Cheap. Put it on during T1 or T2 depending on the race. $5-$10

+1 on what everyone said.  Wear the Tri top during the swim and get a race belt.

I wear a trisuit like in my avatar.  Doesn't slow me down any in the swim that I can tell! And if you do any early season FL tri's you'll get a wetsuit!

Do you have Lock Laces or Yankz on your running shoes yet, they are awesome for slipping on and going.

I swam in a Tri top that had 3 pockets on the back, like a cycling jersey.  The pockets kept catching water.  It felt like I was pulling  small parachutes on my back.

Cool, just bought a tri top and figure I'll give it a "test swim" in the pool before my next race. Thanks for all the advice! I'll let you know how it goes.
