Subject: Clavicle surgery... pretty worried
So friday night I broke my collar bone. I didn't think much about it, not a lot of pain... looked pretty nasty, but I figured it would be some pain meds and time off work to watch tv and sleep. So I went to the Ortho today, he immediately told me I had really hurt myself, like one of the worst fractures he's seen.

Whereas most people break towards the middle of the bone, I broke the end. After looking at the x-rays, I agree it looks pretty crappy. He said the ligaments holding the bone down towards my shoulder were torn, so the bone is poking through the top of my shoulder (very visible from the outside! I'm also bruised all the way down my chest). He also told me that it was very unlikely it would ever grow back (as it's not even remotely touching) and...

... well he basically said if I wanted to have a full range of motion / no pain again I needed to have the surgery. So now I'm really freaking out... going to have my regular doc take a look tomorrow just to make sure that's the best route. I also really got freaked out when he asked me to sign the paper that says I will accept a blood transfusion if needed?!? Wtf is that.

Anybody else had surgery and back at it? Am I freaking for nothing?

I am rehabbing back from clavicle surgery, however my break was in middle and had a plate and 7 screws.
I only have minor crack at end which Doc said should not be an issue. Surgery was suppose to be about 2hrs but took 3.5hrs due to finding some added issues. Surgery and recovery room was a non-event however. First night of surgery was tough as I did not take stay ahead of pain by taking the meds. If you are anything like me, you refrain from the meds...This is NOT the time to be stubborn. Now, just working on rehabing frozen shoulder which was result of immobile period. Good luck.

I had clavicle surgery about 18-months ago...my rotator cuff was repaired at the same time.  I understand being nervous...I was too!  Surgery took longer than they expected and they ended up keeping me over night.  The blood transfusion paperwork you mention I think is just a percaution...if there is too much bleeding then they need to get you more blood.  Surgery is never fun but if you are getting the 2nd opinion and they say it's necessary then just prepare yourself mentally that you need to do it.  The rehab was the worst part for me.  Do everything that the PT ask you to do...but don't do anymore than they recommend.  you'll be swimming, riding and running again before you know it.  OH, and as the other poster mentioned, take the pain killers that first week!

I'd definitely recommend the surgery.  I had a non-union for a year  (they tried everything, including electro-stimulus).  Then when none of this worked my ortho decided to put the plate in -- instant relief!  The plate stayed in for a year, then he removed it because it was visible.  (He said that for guys quite often he leaves it in.)  The only ill-effects I had while the plate was in was some restricted movement.  I didn't have a frozen shoulder and didn't need any PT, but my break was in the middle of the clavicle.  I had an overnight stay in the hospital when he put the plate in because it was close to my lung, but the removal was outpatient.  Good luck, you'll do fine!

Get another opinion.  I would not let anyone plate my clavicle unless the bone was thru the skin.  Non unions are extremely rare.  You trade a scar for  bump or vice versa.  Surgery is never without risk and the plate needs to be removed frequently because it is a relatively subcutaneous bone.  Feel free to PM me if you have more questions

Hello

I was scanning back through some of these posts.

When I went Head & A-- over my handle bars landing on my right shoulder & banging my head on the driveway. My head hurt more than my crushed shoulder.  The Doctor told me I had a broken collor bone. He then placed a velcro shoulder harness around both of my shoulders, placed his knee in the middle of my back and pulled my shoulders (collar bone) back into place.  I of course passed out and went down like a rock. This most pain I have ever had in my life.

Ok we are now in the year 2009 & this collar bone resetting happened in 1972 at Andrews AFB, MD but I am reliving the pain as I write this.  I hope they have come a long ways in setting collar bones 37 years.

4th week post surgery and I'm back on the bars of my road bike (although not on the drops yet... still a bit worried about putting too much pressure on my shoulder.)

I ended up with a plate, 8 screws, and 24 staples. Had a 2nd opinion before the surgery, and I was told that I had torn too many ligaments, that my bone had been broken into 3 pieces, and that the end piece was floating in my lower shoulder while the main piece was pushing into the top of my skin.

I plan to ride a metric century bike race (though I will not be competing... although I suppose thats more due to my 20-21 mph average than my injury haha) so... I suppose all is going as well as can be expected, and you know... chicks dig scars
