Subject: Screwed up programming my Garmin 305--and ended up with a huge PR
I haven't run a decent stand-alone 5k in 8 years, since I ran 20:57 when I was 27 years old.  I ran the same race last night, and decided to use the Virtual Partner on my Garmin 305 for the first time to pace me.  Based on race times in other distances and in tris, I thought I could beat that time by a couple seconds.  I programmed the watch for 3.11 miles in 20:55, thinking that would give me a slight PR and I could maybe pickup a few more seconds in the last 1/2 mile.  On the drive to the race, I wondered what would happen if the race ended up being 3.12 or longer by accident.  Would the watch just stop?  Sure enough, it does.  So I extended the distance to 3.19 just in case, but I forgot to change the time, so unbeknownst to me, the target pace was now 6:33/mile instead of 6:44.  During the race, the only display I glanced at was how many feet in front of or behind my virtual partner I was.  I felt great, and was beating my virtual partner by a couple hundred feet, which is about 20 seconds or so, and I would have been thrilled with the resulting time.  And then I saw the finish line and it read 19:48.  I immediately realized my mistake and sprinted for the line, only to fall a little short and come in at 20:03.  Shucks.  Had I set the watch to pace me to a 20 minute 5k, I'm sure I never would have been able to keep up mentally.  But due to my mistake, I set a 54 second PR and almost broke 20.

And I've decided resting for a race is for the birds.  I did a 750m/17mile/5k sprint two days before the 5k, ran 9 miles and swam 45 minutes on Monday, and biked 22 miles Tuesday morning, 12 hours before the race.  And it was 90 degrees.  And I had a piece of fried chicken for dinner 45 minutes before the race.  There's my new pre-race routine!

My stand-alone 5k does make me a little disappointed in my 5k efforts during tris.  My best during a tri is 23 minutes give or take.  I saw another thread where people say I should be capable to doing my stand-alone time plus 30 seconds to a minute.  I must be biking too hard, or wimping out on the run.

nice job! gotta love being in shape - set a PR after all of that    - fried chicken is good, it is weird how sometimes crap food can make your workout feel great.  as i have posted before, i had an awesome bike interval session once after drinking patron on the rocks for 30 mins or so. . .

i may have to try that virtual partner, i haven't used that function. it really helps in a race to have people to try and stick with.

I'd love to have a coach who knows my capabilites preprogram the Garmin, and I run just chasing the virtual partner without knowing the goal time or any splits along the way.  In some ways, I think that may be the easiest way mentally to set a PR--just just the little digital man on your watch and think of nothing else.  In a normal race with a watch or a GPS, I always doing a lot of math in my head and I think it distracts me from just plain suffering and getting it done.

That's pretty cool. I had an awesome lifting session a few weeks ago after about 4 hrs. of sleep and IHOP for dinner the night before.

'Gratz on the PR! Nicely done!

I don't have the 305, but I used to love working out on the rowing machines in school and "racing" against all the other little boats on the screen! When I was rip- pissed off at a group of people who were targeting my misery as their goal, I named each of the little boats after each of them.

There wasn't one left on the screen by the time I finished.

Heh.

('course, I couldn't move for the next two days, but who's counting?)

I have a similar story but it did not end so well.  I was going for a BQ at the Columbus marathon last fall and set my virtual partner for 3:50 and 26.2 miles.  I went out with the pace group and just couldn't hang with them at mile 19.   Slowed for a mile or so and then got myself together and knew it was going to be close for my Boston Qualifying time at the end.

Wasn't really watching my Virtual Partner or my watch as I was just trying to get to put one foot in front of the other and get to the finish line as fast as possible.

As I crossed the line (the race clock isn't the official time, because you cross the start a few minutes after the gun) I look down at my watch and it says 3:50.  I made it !!

Well...haha I call my son on the way home a few hours later and he says, "Mom, I am so sorry you were so close."  WHAT!!! he tells me the official time is 3:52.18

What had happened was that because my watch was set with the virtual partner when the distance got to 26.2miles it stopped.  While running the marathon I must have REALLY run about 26.4 because of turns and such.

So no Boston Qualifier for me I missed it by 80 seconds.  Hoping to get it this year and I will NOT be using the virtual partner.  Hoping to just stick with my pace group...

See, now I'm just the opposite...I stink at trying to keep up with someone else's pace.  Even if their pace is a few seconds slower than what I planned to run...just the idea that I am not setting the pace makes it feel SO much harder.  I'm much better at checking splits and then slowing down or speeding up accordingly.

But I am a freak....we all know that.

To the OP, congrats on the PR!

I think this is really interesting because it illustrates how mental it all is.
You were clearly physically capable of that pace, but your idea of how fast you could go was holding you back.

I have had similar experiences when my watch messed up in a race and I stopped looking at it, and went faster than I thought I could go.

I think it's fascinating how our minds hold us back or help us. I've also been reading how putting food or water into your mouth but not swallowing it sends your body a signal that you are getting calories, and you can go farther or harder even without them.

I know the mind is doing this for our own protection, but it's fun to learn about the limits of pushing that.

This Virtual Pace is just the incentive I need for my running...
Does this come with the 305 or is this part of the add-on packages?
