Would it make sense to do the same course with 4 or 5 five people to see how you are progressing?

Fortunately, I have a house on a lake that is no wake untill 11:00 with great biking and running right out the door.

We would have to schedule around actual races.

People are talking about trying to analyze their progress, this would seem to be the answer.

What are the thoughts?

Why not use the actual races to see how you are progressing?

Your idea wouldn't hurt unless it interfered with your actual races or your training for them.

Sounds like a grand idea!  Always the issue with biking on the open roads with stopligths, etc making it hard to compare those times (still great training of course), but swim, run and transition time comparison over the same course would be great!   Uhhhh, where are you located in case there is anyone interested and are you offering?

Our local tri club holds mock tri's on Saturday mornings during the off-season.  They treat them more as workouts than competions, i.e., they usually stop and regroup in groups of similar abilities after the swim and bike.  They will also vary the distances based on ability and training goals.

Sounds like a good idea provided the bike portion can be done in a safe manner. If you can create a bike course unhindered by traffic and stop signs/signals that would allow you to compare times across races.

Depending on the distance you may also want to consider having a spotter out on the water in case someone needs help.

You may also want to do the run as a loop course and set out things like water, etc., for aid on each loop.

Do you get to do a good portion of your swim training in the lake?

LOL, Stoplights,  I am from a SMALL town in Northern Michigan,  Wolverine.  The closest stoplight is 11 miles away.  We have a great road, just paved last year with 3' bike lanes on each side, very little traffic.

Donskiman asked about me training in the lake and having a spotter.  Would swim along the shore and it drops off pretty steep, so you wouldn't be more than 20' from where you could touch bottom.  As to my usual training, I moved out of the lake house because it was too small as my 2nd son was about to be born.  My wife insisted on an exercise pool in the basement of the house we built.  I thank her all the time for that demand.

If the veterans thought it was a good idea I was going to post the offer on the Michigan web site to find some participants.  I have lots of room in my new house, the vacant lake house, and my model home for my business for out of towners.

Another great thought.

Maybe some of the ladies from the disintegrating swimsuits thread would want to participate!

That could get you in hot water! LOL

Your setup sounds great. I wish I had a lake to swim in. I have a sister who has a lake house in another state and it's great to visit and be able to swim whenever I want. Like you I just swim parallel to the shore when I'm by myself.

If you didn't live so far away I'd take you up on the offer to do your training races.

The small group that I train with do mock tri's. We don't do them for time, and not at an all-out effort, so we're not doing them to measure progress by time. But the progress we're making is clear. We're building up to a HIM at the end of this season--late September. This weekend we're doing approximately 1.2 mile swim (in the best OWS lake with no powerboats), a 40 mile bike then 10 mile run. Like I said, not a race-day effort, but definitely building a base.

Plus timing it would be problematic because you don't have a controlled transition area. We have to walk to our cars out of the water, lock the bikes, etc.
