OK, so I was trying to research this one, but didn't get anything good from my searches.
I finally got set up with clipless pedals, and am feeling good about using them in my tri tomorrow.
So, I figure I have the following T1 options:
1. Put on shoes at rack, and run funny on cleats till the mount line and mount.
2. Put shoes on bike and run it to mount line and slide on once I get going
3. Run up to mount line, then put on shoes and mount.

So, I have practices #1 and #2 and feel I could do either. I haven't timed myself yet (couldn't get family to stop laughing long enough after the request to come help) to see which would be faster. My gut says #2 is better since I can run easier in socks than in shoes with look style cleats.

My question is can I do #3? Will I be too much of a hazard?

Thanks!

There is a good video on this site about this very thing. It demonstrates the various options.

I have wide thick feet.  At least with the shoes I have, I can not slide my feet into the shoes.  I do the run with the bike shuffle to the mounting area.

If you try #3, make sure you get way off to the side and out of the way before attempting to put your shoes on at the mount line. Shouldn't even be a hint of a chance of a possibility that you would get into someone's way.

If you try #2, make sure you have practiced enough that it's second nature. Again, the last thing you want to do is get in someone's way, of be a hazard to another racer.

My suggestion would be based on where you plan on finishing, or the importance of shaving seconds off your time. Depending on the distance from your rack to the mount line, you can imagine that a quick paced walk to the mount line, can't be that much slower than a run/jog in socks and sliding in and straping on as you start going.

I would suggest, if you going to spend time to put on socks, just make a slow jog or fast walk with your bike and shoes on. Work on flying mount and dismount, straping in as you go over the next few weeks/months, then try it. The last thing you want to do is create and extra confusion for you or the other racers.

Thanks all.
I didn't look at the right place for the video. Now that I have seen it, I feel better.
Going to try the shoe in pedal thing.
I'll tell you how it goes.

Thanks!

i have road cycling shoes and the ratchet system is tough to get into out of when they are on the bike...i personally will be putting my shoes on in transition and just do a running mount since i have no bottle cages behind my saddle.  I dismount the same way...un-clip beforehand and essentially "jump" off the back of the bike and hit the ground running.  But it comes down to what works for you and what feels most comfortable.

OK,
so, I did the shoes on the pedals, slip in my feet.
I have 2 velcro straps on my shoes. I set it so they were open and got on, stepped on them and got up to about 15 mph.
Then, I used my hand to slide in and adjust and pull the straps.
It worked well. My transition was 30 sec faster than last time in T1 and no loss in T2 for putting on running shoes.
My overall bike time went down 2 min 20 sec, which I think I can attribute at least half(if not more) to the pedals/cleats.
Thanks all for recommendations.

Excellent work. If you have the skill and ability, obviously, this method can be faster. Thats why the pros do it this way. Great job doing it perfect the first time.
