I have a $40 giro helmet. It is ok. However it irritates the crap out of my forehead. The material on the inside kills my skin. When I finish my rides my forehead is red irritated and actually hurts and ithces...I had this problem with my baseball helmets with foam padding and ended up having custom pads made for it that are pleather covered (they now sell these type baseball helmets I should have pattened the idea.) I thought about a doo rag or something under it but I have a HUGE head and most helmets I have tried barely fit without adding the extra material.

I guess that you must be allergic to the material covering the foam inserts.  Try glueing a strip of leather onto the insert.  This will probably do the trick and not take up much room on the inside of your helmet.

You are the forum's self-proclaimed resident redneck -- do what ya'll do best.

Use duct-tape.

Duct tape...Actually I thought about that. I did that for my original batting helmet years ago...It is a little to slick...The leather idea occured to me too. I have an old catchers mask with very soft leather covering for the forehead and jaw. I thought about cutting that off and glueing it on. I just went to a bike shop and looked at helmets, they all have basically the same type covering...

Try asking at the bike shop for different pads, they come in all shapes and sizes. Most shops have a box of extras somewhere. The pads usually velcro in, so they are easily changed around. If not you can pull the old ones out and buy sticky velcro at a fabric shop. Also make sure, if you have a roc loc thingy on the back, that it is adjusted as loosely as possible. If that doesn't help, your helmet may be too small. Even though I think Giro is the best, try a different manufacturer. The fit may be different.

I have a friend who has the same sort of problem. He went to Pep Boys and got a little chamois cloth. If it's real chamois, it sort of has varying thickness. Anyway, he got the thinnest part, an edge part, and glued it around the forehead pad.

I always go with the do rag option, that way in addition to forehead protection, if I make a stop for whatever reason, I still can look cool when I take my helmet off.

Head condom?  That's an appealing description!  Hope they don't use that in their marketing campaign.
