Subject: OWS training locations - NoVa
Hey, y'all!

I'm totally new to triathlons (just finished my first sprint on Sunday!!) and I live in Sterling.  I have searched on the internet for places to practice open water swimming but I couldn't find anything around me.  Does anyone know of a place where I could train (for a few more weeks til the fall/winter hits) that is within approx. 30 min. of Sterling?

Also, I haven't tried the W&OD yet, but I really should since it's basically in my backyard.  Does anyone know of a really clear, descriptive map of where the trail leads?  I would be starting on 28 right before the waxpool road exit and I'd like to see where it could take me.

Thanks...I appreciate any help

Here is a map of the W&OD... you can click on portions of it to get a detailed view... if you have any other questions about it feel free to ask me, since I know this trail west of Sterling Blvd. like the back of my hand (too well, my friends would say)...

I also live in Sterling, and there are zero places to OWS train within 30 minutes.. sorry!

But this is just a little further, maybe 45 minutes.  I've done it and it's well worth the trip and money.

What about just heading to Point of rocks or whites ferry and swimming in the Potomac?

I haven't heard very good things about swimming in the Potomac...is it safe?  Is it clean-ish?  I'm sure y'all would know better than me!

Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone.  I'll definitely look into that quarry!!

I wet wade while fishing in the Potomac, and have never had any reactions.  I wouldn't drink straight from it, but it ain't as bad as some may make it seem.

See http://www.usopenwater.org/ regarding swimming at Gunston Manor.  Last swim of the season is 10/18/09.

As for the Potomac, it's "clean-ish", but I'd avoid gulping the stuff.

Hi, I guess I should feel fortunate...  I live in Fredericksburg and about 30 minutes from Lake Anna.  I've been swimming there about every third day for the past month to prepare for the Giant Acorn Tri.  It's absolutely beautiful and clean.  Boaters are non-existent during the week.  Even last Sunday afternoon was a great swim as well with next to no boat traffic.

Afterwards, I've been going for a ride anywhere from 15 to 20 miles.  You're welcome to join me sometime if you care to make the trip.
