Subject: Good first HIM in DMV area?
Hey all - long time lurker, first time poster.

I am interested in people's opinions on choosing a good first time half-IM distance in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area. I have mostly been a runner but in the last two years I have done a few tris and am sad to say I am somewhat hooked! I have one big fall race left to do (MCM) but am starting to think a little about planning for next year.

The tris I have done are: Luray (sprint, '08 and '09), Nations (Int'l, '08 and '09), Naylor's Beach (Int'l, '08). I am a weak swimmer so I NEED to work on that but the distances for the bike and run on a HIM don't scare me tooooo much. Any recommendations for planning a good first race in 2010? Do people usually try to get more experience under their belts before tackling those longer distances?

Thanks!

I wouldn't be sad to say I'm hooked!!! I love it.

Anyway, doing a Half "soon" is totally up to your training schedule.  If you think you've trained enough, then why not?  I did my first half two weekends ago and it was one year from my first tri and a year and 6 weeks from starting to train.  So, I would say that a year is plenty of training (as long as it is the right training).

You have Eagleman up in the Easton, MD area which is an official IM branded race ($)...and we have Patriots Half which is by setupevents.com.

Eman is  full, however there is Patriots and Diamondman, which are in the late summer and offer plenty of time to train.

Set Up events also has Kinetic HIM in May then there is another in NC (White Lake). I did my first at the Patriot.  Had a good race and the new course run was nice and shaded

There is a brand new HIM in southern PA about 3hr from DC called Cannonman. It was held July 23rd.

As was mentioned Set-Up has Kinetic in May---at Lake Anna State Park....I did it this past May as my first HIM (second tri...) and can't wait till May to do it again!!!  Sounds like a good course for you---the swim is two laps with a short beach run/jog/between the laps so it breaks the swim in half, the bike is two loops of rolling hills outside the park and the run is three loops inside the park (bit of a hill coming up out of transition/start of laps 2 and 3 but if you are a runner I'm sure you won't notice itWink).

Savageman scares me but now that I've completed my first HIM I may think about it in a year or 2.  I grew up in western MD and know how high those hills are!!!
