How do they know if they let the computers run for a few more years they won't find a bigger one? Technically speaking numbers are infinite right? I'm not really into math, but it seems to me that it is just the biggest known prime number not the biggest prime number right?

Karl--where'd you see anything about htis being a tax-payer funded program? I had heard this was a distributed computing project...tons of volunteers running a program on the personal computers. If there is a grant involved, I'd expect it would be miniscule.
