The Neil Armstrong thread got me reminiscing. I remember my mom literally making my four siblings and I sit down and watch the landing on the moon.

I also remember my mom making us memorize the preamble to the constitution."We the people of the United States in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

She also forbade us to watch the show Room 222 (I know I am showing my age). There was a scene where a student made a pair of jeans out of the US flag. Of course being young and naive, we didn’t think it was a big deal.

I love her to death, but she was (still is) a little nutty.

I learned the Preamble from Schoolhouse Rock. I can't recite it without thinking of the tune in my head.

Mom didn't force me, but I remember making it a point to watch the first orbital shuttle launch (I was 8 I think. Yah, I'm young).

I never did memorize the entire preamble, but I remember studying the origins of the concept of "republic", including the origins of the word, the origins of the Electoral College, "Checks and Balances" between the different branches of government, and a bunch of other concepts that cause the following generation to look at me like I'm an anachronism.

I was lucky enough to be able to watch that launch live from across the cape.  I was 6.

We had to memorize the Gettysburg Address in the 8th grade.  I've still got most of it, but I don't think I can get all the way through it.

The Constitution song from SHR is one of those songs that gets riveted into my brain for days. Thanks.

During the SATs in HS, you could tell when everyone got to the Constitution questions, they would start humming the SHR "And the preamble goes like this..." song

Dunno about forbidding a show because of it as it could also be used as a "what not to do" teaching point but the Flag Code, section 8d is:
The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

That's how I learned the Preamble.  My kids are shocked that I still know it almost almost 40 years later.

Does the code apply only to taking an actual flag, cutting it up and making something out of it, or does it also apply to clothing that has a “stars and stripes” motif? Is that not considered ok under the code?

I've always taken it as don't cut up a flag and make clothing. Stars and stripes motif is fine. I do realize the motif may resemble very closely a cut up flag but I wouldn't wear something like that so it wouldn't be an issue.
