Subject: Santa Rosa 70.3
hi all

looking to pick a race for the summer .

santa rosa not a sellout due to forest fires that happened . prior to that lots of moans about the road conditions for the bike

race is 7 months away, can it be that bad?

any other race would require a plane ticket which breaks the bank a bit, worth spending the extra money ?

Local races with less travel are ALWAYS worth it even if the road conditions are bumpy on the bike course.  If you are going to travel then be picky, but if you have something close by all means do the race. 

In 2016 I drove 22 hours to St George for Ironman 70.3.  No regrets.  I stayed with my brother who lives in St. George (this saved a lot of money but seeing family is waht made all the travle worth it. ;-)), got to see the Grand Canyon, Four Corners, Lake Powell, Glen Canyon, etc. so it was a great trip.  in 2017 I did the Redman 70.3 in Oklahoma City 2-1/2 hours away from me (and stayed with a guy I knew from our High School Cross Country Team which also was better than spending money for lodging).  The Oklahoma Roads were rough, but I will be doing Redman again despite the rough roads because the roads don't make or break a race.

The roads were only bad in a few places, most of it was fine. I am not sure how the fire has affected roads. It might actually improve the few sections near town if things are rebuilt in time.

thanks for the responses :-)

one thing that occurred to me recently is that this race starts earlier than the other races. I think its a 4am shuttle pick up

hardly get any sleep i think. you would have to fall asleep around 9pm, 10 if you're lucky, that even possible ?!

i'm thinking about doing this one as well. Though I HATE 2 transition setups......argh.

I try to sleep the night before, but to be honest it's mostly just tossing and turning. TWO nights before is where you want a very good night's sleep. 4AM works for me.

Assuming Santa Rosa is the old Vineman...

I did Vineman in 2011.  Roads were surprisingly rough (biking and driving).  My guess is most people forget about road conditions by the third winery stop.  My advice is fill your bike bottle with red wine instead of water.  

The run was OK for the full, but I've heard it can be brutally hot for a 70.3.

I was there only a months ago and it's honestly not that bad. Yes, devastating for the families that lost their homes and properties, but it's not to the point where you can't stay there. Plus they really do need tourism to come back, so for that reason alone I would do this race.

Now bad roads are all relative... they honestly pretty good roads, maybe bad for CA, but for the NorthEast, we would be happy with roads like that.

So with the forest fires and the fact they want tourism back, the hotels still want to charge 300 dollars a night. That’s unacceptable. I also got a list of hotels near race area. an agency that works with ironman event recently informed there are no shuttle transportation .but emailing Ironman directly they tell me there is, but obviously couldn’t tell me which hotels provide it . Seems unorganized right now . Looks like a taxi or Uber is an idea to race start, might be a good idea to have a look at the map and find a cheaper place to rest for the night . What these hotels are charging is daylight Roberry
