Let's see a famous person (and bike rider) get run down/knocked over/harassed and see what happens.  I am wondering if the 'joe schmo' driver would get off like that.

Interesting story.

One caveat.  Beverly Hills is not Los Angeles.

Beverly Hills is an island on to itself.  Has its own police, mayor, school system, etc.

They laws of the rich and famous are much different than those applied to the teeming masses.

Hard to tell exactly what happened since it is a one sided story, but my take on reading it is:

1. The cyclist was probably in the right and did not deserve the tickets. and

2.  The cyclist played a large part in getting the tickets.  She should not have pulled over and stopped when the SUV was tailgaiting her and honking the horn.  Or if she felt she needed to pull over and make sure nothing was wrong, she should have immediately gone on her not-so-merry way as soon as she realized the the motorist wanted nothing more than a confrontation.

There was a case in Trotwood, Ohio where a bicyclist was given a ticket for impeding traffic and fought it (and won), but it required a lot of backing from a cycling organization, an attorney (who was a cyclist himself) that did a lot of the work for free and a trip all the way to the Ohio Supreme Court.  If I were her, I would solicit help from the local or state cycling groups to appeal the ticket.

And there isn't anyway to sue the police officer for professional negligence.  If the cops doesn't know the law.... ummmm that's pretty concerning.  Lucky the lady wasn't in a Mercedes the cop might have had to kill the cyclist.  I do wonder though about the negligence.  For instance if you are hit by a car and the cop fails to investigate the accident properly and blames you just because you are a bicycle can they be held responsible for failure to perform their assigned duties.  It seems awfully hard to believe they can simply do what they choose and not be held legally responsible for their actions.  Fighting the ticket is one thing but it costs money and time.  How do you get that back?

The cop sounded like a d-bag. I can't believe he mocked this person - that's disgusting. Seems like a lot of cops are like that - the very few that I've dealt with were (here in NoVa, idiot drivers abound and I've had my car run into 3 times - once while my car was PARKED in a spot, as I was walking to it and saw a girl slam into it as she was trying to park next to me). Two out of the three cops were incredibly rude to me, when in all 3 cases, the other car was in the wrong. One of them arrived at the scene with NO concern whatsoever, even though my car was the only one with significant damage (I'd been hit by a mini-van that blatantly ran a stop sign when I did not have a stop sign). Not a "is everyone okay" - just shoved the information exchange form into my hand and went to talk to the driver of the van (who was later ruled in the wrong by the insurance company due to two witnesses who corroborated my story). He continued to be rude to me while talking to me and basically implied that I was guilty.

It seems as though cops immediately place the blame on the woman at the scene, and if it's two, well then, they go for who has the most expensive vehicle.

Anyhoo...off of tangent...if the cyclists's story is true, then the cop acted REALLy inappropriately. Because if Beverly Hills drivers are anything like they are here (which I'm sure they are), they're idiot a$$holes driving gas-guzzling SUVs with no regard to anyone else on the road, honking on their merry way. I hope this cyclist can fight the ticket - that's crap. And situations like there are why I am very hesitant to ride on the roads around here, even where there are designated bike lanes.

Since she's in soCal, I can just about lay wager that neither the cop, nor the SUV driver would show up to court if the cyclist goes to court to fight the ticket.
