Gmail is like any other free email service like yahoo, but it is offered by google. To sign up for it, you need to be "invited" by an existing member because it's pretty new. Every once in a while, google will allocate existing members with invites to give out. Most of my friends have accounts so I was just wondering if people here wanted one.

The main difference is it offers 1 Gig (1000 meg) of memory for free. I believe yahoo offers 100 megs of space for free.

I mainly use it for storing my law school notes and documents. You can imagine you can store alot of large pictures or music files or program files.

Is it just like other free e-mail services?  I seem to recollect controversy over gmail's system of computer scanning the content of private messages for key words to link with ads, its infomation storage policy, and the impact on privacy laws.  I have no position on this and I'm not a techie.  There are convincing arguments both pro and con that those who are interested can research.

This may be true but I'm not sure either. Like Ken said, you should research it if you are interested. But just so you know, I don't use it for a stereotypical email system, but more for storing files, pictures, etc. which other people can access.

Still have a couple if you are still interested.

Edit *** Just went to the gmail site to look up their privacy and ad stuff, here's a link about it. Just browsing it, it looks like any other disclaimer stuff that many sites put out.
