Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did my taxes way back in February... I used an online preparer software (TurboTax). Am I screwed (gonna get a check in the mail) if I had them deduct from my return for the cost of using the online software? Not that I'm desperatley needing it or anything, but that sucks! |

Giver ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes. I'm in the same boat. From the IRS: "* Filing and/or preparation fees were deducted from your refund or you received a rapid refund from your preparer. You will be receiving a check instead of a direct deposit. Please see the Paper Check Payment Schedule below. " Edited by run4yrlif 2008-05-15 9:13 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Probably because of the datawarehousing and the current state of the backplane automation used for calculating and sending the refunds electronically. If they don't have the functionality in their automation to alter the actual refund amount for things like preparer fees then they'd have to revert to the older methods for those returns. That is most likely why you're getting a paper check in the mail. It's not easy to implement that sort of automation for a load of hundreds of millions of transactions over the course of a couple of months yet requires the type of zero error 100% availability the IRS must have to provide and be absolutely impregnable to hackers at the same time. Hard, hard, hard. |

I have no idea what it is like to get money back. The transaction fee is applied to the money I owe and charged to my credit card when I pay taxes owed. I think that it is total crap that the transaction fee is a percentage of taxes owed rather than a fixed fee. I think that is because VISA/MC charge a percentage as well? I could be wrong about this... it does suck, though. |

They're using the same data for the rebate check autodeposits that they used for the refunds. If you got a paper refund, you're getting a paper rebate. I already have my rebate and I got it electronically. I imagine this is being done because they didn't have time to develop the software necessary to do the one-time rebate operation unless they leveraged the existing refund automation. |

They did say the rebates were going to take a couple months, ordered in some nondisclosed fashion according to social security numbers. |

Paper checks will also go out based on Social Security number. For Social Security numbers ending in 00 through 09, the paper checks will be mailed starting May 9 and will continue through May 16. A similar process will be repeated in the following weeks. Please allow additional delivery time, perhaps 3 to 5 days, since the paper checks are being sent through the mail. PAPER CHECK

I thought it was weird They reduce the refund if your AGI is over 75K for single filers. I think the reduction is 10% or so of the amount over 75K. My refund was enough for a bottle of scotch...cheap scotch. Edited by cooutdoors 2008-05-15 11:31 AM |

It's based on the last 2 digits of your SSN. FWIW, I had to pay in...so I won't be seeing mine until June 6th or there abouts (which sucks, because I'm moving that week...hello and extra week...I wonder if they will forward or if it will get sent back to the government?)
