Has anybody looked at and thought about doing the Marin Triathlon?

It's an Oly at the end of October and it looks like it could be a lot of fun. I think I'm in.

I've considered it, but it looks like a fairly intimidating oly -- they stress several times that it's very challenging! I'm not sure if I want to make it my first oly. If I do end up doing an oly this year, it'll probably be Treasure Island in November.

It does look like a fun race, though, and I bet it'd be beautiful.

It does look like a lot of fun.  I don't think the course is all that challenging.  It's just a longer version of the one I did a few weeks ago.  The water should be pretty warm.  The bike course is not hard but kindof technical lots of rolling hills and twisty in places.  I think the run could be a little tough.

Looks interesting.  They have Showdown at Sundown (sprint) at China Camp in June too, but I have never done it.  San Pablo Bay is not very inviting though, maybe high tide will be OK.

Grew up in Marin....used to hang at China Camp when I lived in San Rafael......I think I may do it!

Definately doing Oly at Pac grove in Sept.  and Tri Girl Tri sprint in Oct, we'll see how the injuries hold up in training.  Hope it does n't sell out too early before I decide.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Tiburon Tri in July is a lot fun too.  Fire Department puts it on.  Sprint.

Well, I'm in. I signed up this morning. It looked like too much fun to pass up. The swim I can handle, the bike will be a bit tough but I can handle it too, and on the run I will do what I need to survive.

I also did Showdown this year so I am fimiliar with the most technical part of the bike and the area around transistion. I liked the location, so another race it that area is fine with me.

I grew up in Marin too, right off N San Pedro Road just as you head out to China Camp. The ride from McNears to Lucas Valley will bring back some old memories.

I will be doing Tiburon again this year as it will be my one year anniversary from my first race. I am hoping to cut a good chunck of time off.

If anybody else signs up, let me know.

I wonder if it's still open?  I'm thinking about doing it myself, but want to see if it works with Eric's schedule as well.

I signed up on Monday. Looks like a lot of fun. Only my second tri so I'm pretty nervous but I'm following one of the free training plans on here to prepare and will ride the bike route as much as possible.

One weird thing... I noticed some conflicting information on the site about the bike route.  The written description describes a loop that passes by Dominican College.  The map shows (and states) an out and back route.  I emailed them to ask which it is.

Update:  It is the out and back route shown on the map.  Turns around before the monstrous (to me anyway) climb on Lucas Valley Road.

Has anyone else noticed the following note that has been posted on their website?

"Please pay attention to the fact there will be other traffic on the roads, and please be aware that city, county and state vehicles will be throughout the course doing their civic duty, and not just rooting you on."

What is your interpretation? Are we going to need to stop at red lights? Hope not. What about the two freeway on/off ramps we pass on the bike course?

Actually, I'm still in...but now as a relayer.  I found a swimmer and a cyclist and I'll be doing the run in a walk/run format, depending on how I feel.  I'll be 5 months pregnant by the time it rolls around.

I'm doing the Marin Country Tri.  I attended the TriMore Fitness clinic for it last weekend.  The executive race director was there and answered some questions.  One of the coaches is also the transition director.  We got a chance to run the full course and I have to say that I was completely impressed.  I've been training on this course almost exclusively since the clinic.

The cap on the event is 1,000 people.  I believe there are about 400 currently signed up.  If I remember correctly registration will end at 1,000 people or October 19, whichever comes first.  The executive director said he expects around 600.

The swim will be VERY fast, as it begins during an incoming tide.  The rocks at entry and exit are VERY sharp.  I'm still nursing some nasty gashes on a finger and my feet.  I'm going to wear neoprene booties for the race.

The ride is probably a moderate challenge.  It starts on a nice hill and has some rolling hills for the first 5 miles, then goes into a fast and flat stretch to the turnaround.  The last 3 miles of the ride are probably the most difficult, but still only moderate.

The run kicked my a**.  It starts up a steep dirt hill, then goes out on the road for 2.5 miles of some reasonable hills.  It then turns onto the ShoreLine trail for the remainder, which is packed single-track with roots, rocks, sand and a few hills.  I've been running this route as much as I can to prepare.  On the day of the clinic, it was 95 degrees and I just couldnt handle it.

I highly recommend checking out the next clinic if you are interested in this race.  Here's the link:  http://www.trimorefitness.com/group_programs/marin.asp

Local police will be doing traffic control at the lights and stop signs.  From what I've been told, we will not have to stop.  The first 3-4 miles on N. San Pedro has no bike lane, but has very little traffic.  The rest of the ride has huge bike lanes.  The main traffic area is at the Freitas Pkwy exit for 101 which will absolutely have to be controlled as it is very dangerous.

Lucas Valley Rd. is completely flat and very fast.  The hills are on N. San Pedro and mostly on the way back.
