Subject: Do you swim with your mouth open or closed under water?
I just noticed that I open my mouth when my head in underwater while doing a front crawl. I have tried closing my mouth, but when I turn to take in a new breath, I have to open it up and it seems to take too much time.

It seems harmless in the pool, but I am worried I am going to eat up a small fish on my open water swims.

What do you guys and gals do?

Not sure I understand the question.  I breath out of both my mouth and nose when my face is in the water.  I continue to breath out until I turn my head for a new breath.  I sounds like maybe you are holding your breath.  I think you should work on continuous breathing while you swim.  I may be giving your bad advice though as I've never had any formal swim techniques training.

I leave my mouth open in fresh water and try to close it and only use my nose in salt.  You should definitely breath smoothly and continuously under water, this will save you from exhaling when you turn your head.

As for fish, that is just another source of protein I don't have to take in on the bike.

x2

It sounds like maybe you are a nose breather or are holding your breath? I breathe out through both my nose and mouth while swimming.

I exhale thru my nose in the pool and the lake and inhale thru my mouth in an attempt to limit the amount of water I swallow.  But since I usually have to pee by the end of the swim, not sure it helps much.

I breathe in and out through my mouth.  I've tried to breathe out through the nose, but I seem to end up getting water up my nose, don't know why that is, but if I breathe out through my mouth I don't get water up my nose.

Thing that's odd about my breathing, is that in the pool, I breathe every stroke in salt I breathe every three.

Open. I just always have. I don't have to worry about salt water where I live, so its not much of a problem... don't worry about the fish, I'm pretty sure they'll all be scared away by everyone swimming and they won't get in your mouth =)

I am not quite sure if my mouth is open or closed under water. All I do know is it is relaxed. Now that I think about it, my mouth must be open because my jaw or face would be tired at the end of the swim if I were open and closing it. I do most of my breathing through my mouth, I only exhale enough though my nose to equalize the pressure so water does not enter my nose.

Someone mentioned exhaling through their nose. Exhaling through the mouth is much more efficient as it allows for faster and more complete emptying of the lungs to allow in for more fresh air when you breath. If you want to test this, see how long it takes to empty your lungs though your nose, and then see how long it takes through your mouth. Monumental difference!

When I am relaxed my mouth hangs slightly open, so ideally this is how I swim. Even in funky tasting open water swims, I find after a few strokes the taste is not noticable and though the water goes in my mouth, I do not swallow it. It kind of flows in and out evenly throughout the swim. In the pool, the only time I breath through my nose is when I do flip turns (or try to do them) as that keeps me from getting water up the nose. I have not done a saltwater swim so do not know if this would pose a problem.

As long as you are not swimming with a mouth full of worms this is not going to be a problem. Fish survive because they can out swim creatures that swim a lot faster than you. Now jellyfish, that's a different story. Of course keeping your mouth closed is not going to help you there.

Swim mouth open or closed, just slightly exhale through your nose with your face in the water. Some of it will make it out of your mouth. However, if you are racing in the water ot sprinting in an workout, you want to use an explosive exhale to vacate your lungs of carbon dioxide befor inhalation.

Regardless of where I swim or how fast or how long, I always breathe out through my nose and mouth the entire time my face is in the water.  When my face is out of the water, I breathe in through my mouth.

I know some people just breathe out through the nose, but I don't see how...

I think I have my mouth open all the time too.

For fish, I wouldn't worry, they don't want to go in there and usually can swim fast enough to get away!

A couple months ago I did an open water swim with a group and a guy next to me got a jelly fish in his mouth (ouch), so I guess he was also swimming with his mouth open under water...

I have my mouth open too. I think I would suffocate if I tried to swim with my mouth shut!

I usually have my mouth open a little. I usually exhale fairly hard as soon as my face starts going under and then a nice even flow after that. Most of it is through my nose... a little from the mouth. I don't know what the "norm" is.. this is just what I do. Whether you mouth is open or shut, just make sure you're not holding your breath. The primary urge to "breathe" is triggered on the ammount of CO2, not the lack of O2.

I feel bad for the guy behind you, "hey, did the water just get warm?".  *There's* an incentive to close your mouth when swimming.  Laughing

I leave my mouth open most of the time.  When in the pool, it occasionally causes me to swallow a bunch of clorinated water.  I reallly need to keep it closed more.

I swim with my mouth open. I always have a small pool of water in my mouth. It's pretty gross when I swim in lakes. I can't imagine what I'm swallowing. I try not to think about it.

Good to hear that I am not the only one who swims with their mouth open while underwater.

Thanks for all your feedback!
