Come meet the gang!  BT will be at the Hi-Fi triathlon with a booth and a pre-race talk given by marmadaddy.  Features a Sprint and a Olympic race.

This is a great season-ender or a perfect beginner race as it takes place in a protected bay with warm water while the bike and run are flat and scenic along the ocean.  The Longhorn Sprint and Oly is now this race.

See Who's racing!

I'm actually considering flying to TX to do the oly with my BT friends. Does anyone know if you can rent a bike -- road bike -- for this race or would I need to transport mine? Any recommendations on which way to go?

Thanks.

Hummm, I've had this on my list of potential year end races since May, it's now moved up the potential races - will check schedule.

as for bike rentals, try these, no experience with them just a quick google search:

We are thinking of doing the same thing. For a bike rental I found West End Bicycles (713)861-2271. For wetsuit rental I found Tri on the Run (832) 673-0600.

I want to do this race but due to lack of funds have to wait till at least sept to register.  Can you tell me if that would be to late?  Of if the field is close to full for at least the Sprint?  How many do they plan to have for the Sprint?

I just booked my hotel reservations at the"Inn at the waterpark".  Arriving on Fri. Oct. 23 for 3 nites. ($61/nite) I'll be registering for the Sprint in the next few days and this will be my first Triathalon.  I understand that BT  or the HI Fi Tri has special rates at this hotel but you can beat the rates if you use Expedia.  I hope I don't get in trouble for giving out this info. Does anyone know how many intrants will be allowed in the Sprint?  I don't want to wait too late to register.  Thanks,  Dan

I emailed Keith directly about the sprint race and i told him i was going to wait till first of sept to register and he told me id be ok with space available. I know as of now they have 150+ people right now for the sprint.  This will be my third race when i take this one.  But hey thanks for the tip on the hotel as i plan to leave friday evening and spend the nite there and head back sometime on sat.

Thanks again and good luck.

I will be competing in this race. I had originally planned to make this my first Oly but work got in the way and my training hasent been consistent the last 5 weeks or so. i'm now seeing what kind of shape I am currently in and then i'll decide whether I do the sprint or Oly.

Either way I'll be there for sure.

I just got registered for the sprint.  I went ahead and joined USAT for a year and printed off my temp membership card.  This will be my first tri and I'm a little concerned about the 19 mile bike portion.  I emailed Keith to make sure that the info was correct and he said that the bike portion for the sprint and the international will be the same this year (19 miles).  Oh well, I'll have to put more time in on the bike training!  See everyone there!  Dan

I'm glad you mentioned that. I just assumed that the bike for the sprint would be the same as for the LoneStar Tri held at the same venue earlier this year.

I've been lurking on the site for about two months now and signed up for the hi-fi sprint two weeks ago. This will be my first tri and hopefully it will be a fun one!

I hope Galveston is still there after Ike. I hope those of you who live in that area stay safe. We are catching the bands of the storm in Baton Rouge and it feels bad here. I can only imagine its going to be very bad there.

Keith already posted over on ST that he did not think Hi-Fi would be happening.  One of the roads used for the bike is already under 3 feet of water ahead of Ike

Hopefully everyone in the area is doing okay after the storm. Does anyone know where to check for if will be canceled?

F1longhorn - Does anyone know where to check for if will be canceled?

I'm sure Keith will post updates in his race forum first:

Though I'm sure he will update us too as more information comes in.

Hey all,
right now my first guess will be that the race will not happen. Obviously, Galveston took a major hit and is in tough shape.

It's really sad. I have developed some great friendships with people on the island, through this and Lone Star, and it hurts to see the pictures and hear the stories.

The city is in full-on recovery mode, and it's not the right time to ask about Hi-Fi. We'll have an answer by the end of the week, I'd guess.

The city needs to recover, and the last thing they want to deal with is helping plan a triathlon right now. Of course, I could be wrong.

We'll make the decision in plenty of time, to give everyone time to plan accordingly.

At the very least, we'll be planning a fundraising event for the island. I don't know if it'll be that weekend or not, as I just have no idea of what state things will be in.

Will keep you posted....thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by Hurricane Ike...

Outdoors events and acivities are obviously subject to the whims of mother nature. Hurricane Ike was a devastating example. Whether or not the triathlon is held is of minor significance. Perhaps the triathlon community across the country will stage races next season with procedes benefitting victims of this terrible disaster. Just a thought...

I agree. It looks as though Hi Fi will be postponed until 2009. We're working with the city to stage a 5k/10k with 100% of the proceeds going to helping the island. We're trying to have this on Oct 25, and hope that a bunch of you will join us.

I'm still trying to make sure it'll be ok to do so. Moody Gardens is ok, and WANT the event. If it's still too soon for the city, we'll do something as a part of Lone Star in the spring. That's DEFINITELY a go.....

Will hopefully have a definitive answer today on what the city feels comfortable with...

I'm in for a 10K as well.  Traffic is a mess down there today due to the returning folks.  Be careful.

Hello to all of our Hi-Fi Tri participants and their families…

First of all, we would like to thank you for your patience. It has been a long process trying to make contact with officials in Galveston – they have been overwhelmed as you can imagine, and still are very busy trying to bring order to the island.

Unfortunately, the devastation to the island was extensive, and they are still without sewer and electricity, and running water in places. Today they are finally letting residents back on the island to check on their homes, and it will be a very long and hectic day for all involved. After speaking with the Galveston Police, and the Mayor’s Office, it is obvious that Galveston will not be ready for the Hi-Fi Tri event on October 25th. It would simply put too much pressure on an already over-burdened city. At this point we don’t know when the city will be ready, so we have decided to cancel the event rather than postpone it.

The good news is that Moody Gardens fared quite well during the storm, and the exhibits and the hotel should be up and running again soon. Once the island is ready for visitors, we hope that you will visit Moody Gardens, as they really need your patronage to recover. We have been assured that the island will be ready for the Lone Star Triathlon Festival, April 3-5, 2009, so please plan to support Galveston and register for the event. Registration opens October 1st at www.endorfunsports.com. We are also hoping to hold a 5k/10k fundraising event at Moody Gardens this fall to help raise money for our friends in Galveston whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Ike. Please stay tuned for info on this, as it depends on the city’s progress in the next few weeks.

As far as the entry fees that you have paid for Hi-Fi Tri, we are going to send out an e-mail very soon with a link where you can click and choose what you’d like to do with your entry fee. The choices will be: 1)full refund made via check or credit card, 2)transfer your entry fee to Lone Star Tri (April 3-5, 2009), or 3)full or partial donation (amount of your choice) of your entry fee to a Galveston Relief Fund that we are setting up with the city to make sure that those who need it most will receive direct assistance.

We have received so many wonderful e-mails from you, our athletes, offering your help and good wishes. Many of you were also affected by Ike, and we hope that life will get back to normal for you again soon. We thank you so much for your support of our efforts, and for your continued support of the people of Galveston and the surrounding communities.

Rock On!!!

Keith,  Thanks for the update and the offer on the refunds.  Can you confirm if the refunds will include the price for the discount tickets to Moody Gardens that we purchased through Endorsfun as a package with the registration fee?  Will we need to contact Moody Gardens about?  Thanks for any help on this.  We will not be able to come this Fall if the Tri is off but hope to make it in April.  Dan
