Subject: heart rate monitors
hey! does anyone have any knowledge on heart rate monitors? i want one that is a watch as well. well to be specific i want one that will keep track of my heart rate, miles ran and biked as well as laps swam? does something like this exist? what about brands, timex, nike, underarmor???

Candice,

I wear a polar S150 and it displays beats per minute, % of HR max or current avg.  Allows you to program one workout with HR target zones, stop watch, and a cycling feature for speed and distance.  I use a Garmin 305 for my biking and since i suck at swimming, I try and concentrate on form as of now.  Good luck

I have the Garmin 305 (had the 301 before) and love it.

It does all of that EXCEPT swimming. Don't take it swimming. You're thinking it says it's waterproof to 1m. Don't believe it.

What I love about it:

- 1 unit that I can use for running and biking
- Also does HR
- GPS
- Quick release to make it really easy for racing
- Their customer support

What I don't:
- Why can't it be waterproof?

I have no experience with Polar. It's my understanding that it is 100% waterproof, which is a good thing. It isn't GPS and bike though (I think).

I have the Garmin 301 so x2 on what Jot said. But, more and more lately I have just been using my Cateye (bike computer) for keeping bike data.

I have a Sports Instruments Pro 9 HRM and it works just fine. I don't really use it much though. If I didn't have such a large assortment of gadgets already, I'd probably just get a Garmin 305. I have a Garmin 201, and let me tell you, wearing GPS on one wrist and a HRM on the other makes you feel kind of silly.

As far as the swimming goes, you can just get a cheapie Timex Ironman watch to do your lap times. They are pretty well-built and can handle the chlorine and such just fine.

I use a Polar RS200D for general fitness, swimming and running. It works well.

I use the Garmin 305 for running and biking. I like Jot wish it was waterproof. The only other thing is that it is bulky.

so as i am saving up for a garmin 305 any suggestions of something cheap that i should buy in the meantime? or just save the money? how about buying them on ebay? does that seem safe? i am always a cynic about ebay purchases.

I wouldn't buy the Garmin on ebay. Their support is really good, but they state up front that they don't do warrantee work for auction purchases. I'd check Amazon or Costco. Costco has them sporadically for a good price.

The Sports Instruments Pro 9 (which I have) and Pro 7 (which has the same functionality except for saving five workouts) are on sale at Nashbar for $20 and $15.  You can't go wrong for that price - they don't track your milage (no GPS), but mine has been great for HR data.

The GPS is what tells you: total time, total distance, time traveled, MPH, elevation and route taken.  Here is a sample of one of mine i downloaded: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/6351575

The 305 does have a HR monitor too.  I have the 205 with out the heart rate monitor.  I love it and wouldn't buy any other cycle computer.   I don't know about the forerunners made by garmin, i think they are more geared towards runners.

My inner geek is offended that you could even think like that.

I'll give a few reasons, but preface it with this:

1) The single best thing about them is the data is cool.

Ok, here is the theory (maybe Harry can chime in too):

When you start looking at athletic performance a lot of what you're
doing is increasing your aerobic fitness. Some of this comes from
developing muscles, biomechanical efficeincy, etc,, but a good portion
comes from your heart becoming more efficient. HR is a good
window into your fitness and daily effort.

When you combine it with Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) it becomes
a valuable training tool. If there is a day that your RPE is high, your
time is high and your HR is high it is probably telling you that you
are fatigued and perhaps a rest day would be useful.

If you have a day where your RPE is low, your time is low, and your
HR is low it tells you that you can probably increase distance or
intensity.

If your HR is unnaturally high before a workout consensus seems to
be (although this isn't universal) that perhaps you are fatigued or
illness is coming on.

So, it is a datapoint into your fitness that you wouldn't otherwise have.
It is not the Oracle, but it is helpful.

If you think that's complicated, wait until we talk about powermeters.

Someone posted about Sports Instrument Pro 9 HRMs being on sale for $20 at Nashbar. I've seen some Polar HRMs for $40-60 on amazon, too.

GPS really isn't essential. I have a Garmin 201 that I picked up for $99 but I only really use it for trail running. When I run on streets, it's easy to get a pretty close distance/elevation map via a mapping program like BT has. Cycling distance can be calculated the same way, or you can pick up a bike computer for $20-40 or so.

Ok I don't feel so strange now. I might get one, but more for the gym so I can stay in the Cardio zone. But it is not the highest thing on my list.

I didn't get mine here but because it is the old style model it's easy to find cheaper.

Here is the "Big Guy" perspective.  I have had a HRM since right before my first Tri - I did not (nor do I now) sync the data like a good geek should. However, since June 1st I have used it on most Bike rides and running.

Why?  In starting the training plan for Ironman AZ it became quite apparent that I "SUCK" at nutrition.  Part of this is that I was not consuming enough calories on the Bike to feed my run, but the biggest part is that I was biking/running in an anaerobic state!  Sure, I had a few quicker miles and felt like I was even starting to get faster, but the truth is that I was setting up for the big BONK fall!

Am I faster now?  Perhaps a little, but not much - however, I can now run or bike pretty long miles without the fatigue factor just by being aware of my HR and trying to keep it below the zone where I burn out my fuel.  I really should move to the next step of having a VO2 max test, but for now, the HRM allows me to focus on a nutrition plan that works instead of wild guessing all the time!

I am not sure of the actual value those doing a sprint/olympic would have - but any century, marathon, HIM or IM plans ussully have HR zones for a reason!
