Is anyone doing the Niantic sprint tri on August 3rd? It'll be my first ocean experience... I am a little nervous.

I'll be there. Have fun! The nerves will be gone after 30 seconds of swimming.

But remember they have meat tenderizer for the jellyfish stings

I wouldn't really call it an "ocean swim" as the bay is rather protected. Don't worry.

As mentioned, it's a good/fun race and well organized.

Good luck!

The jellys have super jelly power this year. Don't underestimate them.

Eastern Point Beach in Groton had warning signs last week. It was eerily like Jaws. I've gotten a couple stings this past few weeks; one in the armpit which was no fun at all!

I will also be in the race. Last weekend there were no jellyfish in Hammonasset State Beach, but I have seen a ton in Misquamicut, Madison town beaches and Groton Long Point this year.

I'm doing this race as well. I am hoping to get there early enough Saturday to check out the swim course, but if the traffic from NYC is bad, it won't happen. How is water? Are there waves/chop? Any current (to hopefully help us a bit)?

Jellies seem to be everywhere right now. I've been getting assaulted by them in NYC this summer.

Very calm area. I have been north and south of the area at the beaches, jellyfish were far worse earlier, werent too bad last weekend.

I had a look at weather.com and it looks to be a bit cooler there, particularly in the early morning. Does anyone happen to know the water temperature? I'm packing for the trip today, very excited about the race! Hope everyone is having a good Friday.

According to the buoy at ledge light (about 5 miles away, but in the middle of the sound, looks like 70.

Likely acurate for Niantic as well.

BTW: Jellyfish are seriously out this year. Full suit might be adviseable if you have one.

70 sounds nice. And thanks for the jelly warning. Unfortunately my suit is sleeveless but I've been training every weekend in the jellies and have gotten so used to the stings that I don't even stop anymore. They stung us on the face in the NYC Tri so sometimes I guess even the full suit can't protect you!

How did everyone do? Some 'kid' hit a guardrail I guess and went over. I lost my chain towards my shoe. Aside from that great race, I only saw a few jellyfish on the way in closer to shore.

I did a race report on it...not sure how to send a link. The swim was good except that I saw a jellyfish about 20 feet in. Just enough to freak me out for the rest of the swim then towards the end there was one right in front of my face as I put my head in...luckily I didn't have that much further to go.
Also had a MAJOR bike issue which cost me about 20 minutes from my ride time. once it was fixed I was good to go. very frustrating though...check this out!

Was that run course really 3.5 miles or was it shorter?

The run is 3.2 miles, and the bike is 11.1 miles.  I put the courses up in BT routes, so people can grab them (links in my blog - from Tuesday I think).  They so need to fix that on the HMF page.

Thanks. I didn't think I was running a sub-8 pace.

Definitely short (and since they don't put out mile markers, they don't catch it).

I was volunteering on the run course and some dude actually stopped to argue with me about how the course was short.  He was yelling "this can't be the finish line" as well at me, when it was nowhere in sight, though, so I think his brain was a little hinky.
