Veteran 437![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: I have had it with HammerOk . . . generally I have liked their products . . . but over time I have about had it with them. #1 they have to spend at least 50% of their budget in advertising. I never go more than 1 week without a mailing. #2 If you read through all their products you would think you need them all just to survive. You could spend $400 a month using their products. #3 this month in their big newsletter thing they defend their use of Stavia (which some countries have banned) by using a WIKIPEDIA entry as their main scientific basis. Are you kidding me? At that moment they lost me as a customer. |

It's annoying that they are being touted as essential when they're clearly not. But in their defense of using wiki... I just tried to find any stevia info sites that weren't selling products or hyping it as the latest, greatest, natural sweetener and found none. I wouldn't call a wiki entry a scientific basis for research, but it's got to be less biased than the crap I was finding, and it would be a good place to start finding other, real literature in PubMed and the like. Just my $0.02, -Sunny |

Elite 4235![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Spring, TX | Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerThey do make it sound like a person needs to use all of their products to even complete an event. After reading their advertisements I had to ask myself, how have I made it this far without Hammer? Back when I lifted weights, it was the same thing with MuscleTech products. I finally realized the it's better to keep it simple than to go with a variety of fancy products that are probably more placebo than anything else. |

Just my $0.02, -Sunny I agree with your point. This is what makes me even more skeptical. There is not much science out there defending this stuff or really attacking it. To me, they would be better served to say that currently the US has not banned it, that research on its harm is limited and that they will watch how this unfolds. The approach they have taken, making a currently unknown topic look like hard science makes me wonder about all the other research I see in their publications. Things like increase HGH 400% by taking protein before bed. Things like their very hard limits on how much liquid, carbs and electrolytes a body can take in an hour, etc. I got too much into supplements (IMHO) and it became a self serving cycle. The more I took the more I wanted to add . . . like the magic bullet was out there in a pill. I ran faster races and felt just as good before I started to take things than during. I ran my best 13.1 (1:48) without drinking a drop during and only a latte before it to help me 'go potty'. I think the 30 minute post workout window is great overstated in its importance. I think too many fuel too much for short or limited length events and I think the sports nutrition folks are making lots of money for this. I say to each their own and I stand by that. That does not stop the thoughts in my head. I see significantly overweight people doing gu before a 5k and I feel that they have been misled. I never say anything. I smile and I tell everyone 'go get em' or 'great race'. I ride with people that are all into fueling with hammer or similar drinks or gels and pills, etc . . . on a 2 hour casual Sunday morning ride. I have done these things to and I know how easy it is to get caught up in all this. Edited by indygreg 2008-07-24 3:25 PM |

Member 46![]() Chicago suburbs | Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerI worked for GNC a few years back. Pick up any vitamin/supplement book sponsored by any supplement company and when you finish reading it, you will be taking 20 pills and 3 shakes a day, and spending your whole paycheck. The truth of the matter is, these companies could be putting anything they want in their pills and shakes, and tell you it does whatever they want it to do for it to sell. Stick with the essentials and use the extras in moderation. And for everyone out there, please don't buy diet pills. I used to get people returning them all the time complaining that they didn't work lol. Those are the biggest scam in the industry. |

My exact reaction! I got free samples of heed, and mixed it with gatorade to be able to tolerate it. Now I drink basically water and the occasional gatorade (powdered, it's cheaper) and take the occasional gu. I've found that eating real food before a ride/swim helps better than trying to fuel up on gu during. |

Interesting. I first started using Hammer products for the sole reason that I thought Heed was the best tasting stuff I ever tried. |

Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerI like the Hammer gels - but yeah, their advertising is way annoying. I've heard mixed things about HEED...not sure if I want to try it. Will probably just stick with the gels - I use GUs and Clif Shots all to the same effect - I just mix them up for variety. And I love the apple cinnamon Hammer gel...tastes like pie |

Member 92![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerMy body reacts well with Hammers Insurance caps. I just started to use Heed on the bike and during Strength training. I only use one scoop and not the 3 recommended for my 205 pounds. Otherwise, the taste is too much.
In the past I used Endurox, which has the best orange flavor.
I just want to find a good drink that isn't full of crap. Always open for recommendations/suggestions To indygreg. Yes, they make it sound like you have to take all sorts of sh*t even if your only exercise is doing the dishes. As mentioned, I like their Insurance caps...the Heed is questionable. To be honest I do not even know what flavor it is, thats the way I like it. I use Carb BOOM! gels simply because they gave me sponsorship and I can get them free/super cheap. When I used to buy gels at retail I used whatever was on sale or cheapest, to me they were all basically the same except caffeine/no caffeine. |

I think they get their list from USAT or if you've ever done a race that they sponsored......it's just a matter of time. I've never ordered anything from them and I received my second mailer in the last month yesterday. Their gels are okay but IMO, Heed is the by far the nastiest sports drink invented. |

I personally stopped using their products when 3 of their sponsored athletes tested positive for steroids because their products were contaminated. I do not think there is any proof that Hammer products were contaminated. As I understand it, an athlete made that claim. But to me that is a joke. Roger Clemens did not know what was being injected in his a$$. Bonds did not know what was in the clear and cream. Every cyclist who has tested positive is innocent and it was just a lab mess up. And everyone in jail is innocent. Hammer has denied these claims as I recall and even know I hate them (I started this thread) I believe then 100% in this case. Competitors cheat and so many are using enhancing drugs. I hate all their excuses and lies. |

I wish they'd stop mailing me crap. I've never tried any of their stuff before and the inordinate amount of mail they send me almost makes me not want to - I'd prefer companies spend their money on product development and such rather than sending me stuff in the mail every other week. |

New user 1 | Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerI've used their stuff for 3 years and also love their Hammer Forum, it's a posting site where athletes can exchange ideas on training, fueling etc.. Are they a little intense and passionate, yeah. However they make excellent products and for me, the proof is in the result. If I had more money I would use more of their products, but I've learned over time to cherry pick what works best. I started using their products because I have trouble with simple sugars. I get huge drops in my blood sugar levels and that can be a real bummer when you are training. I use their products in the following way and have had excellent results-- I usually sip some HEED while I am getting ready for the swim and pop an endurolyte. I pre-mix the Perpetuem in a flask with a little bit of water. It tastes kind of like a pb&j sandwich. That way I just use the flask and water on the bike and pop endurolytes once an hour. If it's a longer ride I might pop a race cap once an hr. I jump off the bike, take a gel and do that every 45 min. I feel great! How can I argue with that? I would recommend you all check out the Hammer Forum on the left side of their home page. I have learned so much about training and fueling from the other athletes. Just another point of view.

Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerI keep seeing this thread when I come in this forum and it makes me want to dislike Hammer. But then I eat one of their apple cinnamon gels and it is SOOOOOO good. So much tastier than Clif, or even Gu - and goes down easier, not as thick. So I do not hate Hammer. |

I second the opinion that they are in the business to sell product. The frequency of the ads drive me nuts, and my recycling bin gets a great workout. I love Hammer gels, but my body cannot tolerate HEED, and I have started using Amino Vital for liquid fuel, with DOES seem to work well with my system. |
