New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() About 3 months ago I switched to these 3 items + a tall glass of OJ for my breakfast and cut out my cereal mixture of Special K, Honey Nut Cheerios and Trader Joes High Fiber Cereal. I am telling you, this is the breakfast of champions! I am truly feeling fantastic and training harder than ever before. I am also LEAN LEAN LEAN. The big bowl of cereal was giving me way too many unecessary carbs that I did not put to work for me until the evening workout at 6 or 7 PM. I buy the larger sized Bananas, eat roughly 30 Almonds (instead of the recommended 21 as a serving size) and down 2 tall glasses of non-fat milk. Additionally, I usually duplicate this combo at night for desert, 9 or 10 PM. Sometimes substituing Milk for Non Fat Yogurt. Or swapping the Banana for an Apple. I go through about a pound of Almonds per week, approx 15 Bananas per week, and 2 Gallons on Non Fat Milk per week. If you havn't tried it, Bananas go beautifully with Almonds. This is what's working for me BIG TIME! I just thought I'd share! ENJOY!

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Actually does sound delicious, but I personally need a bit of variety. Do you really eat the same thing every day? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I love all 3 of those food items, too. However, I cannot eat bananas before or during a workout or race...afterwards, is fine...but not before. I tried it a few times and I was doubled-over with pain in my gut. Question: are raw almonds better than roasted? I always buy the unsalted, dry roasted variety...have not tried the raw ones. What's different about them? |

New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() Winston - Good question. Funny, but for me at this point in my training, it's ALL about results. For a long time I did not really understand that you get out what you put in. I am on a perpetual diet. Most of the time, I'm pretty bored with the food selection but I focus solely on refueling and giving my body what it needs. I think about my workout the next day and disregard the monotany of the menu. However, I definitely eat what I WANT on the weekends. But I no longer enjoy "Junk" food. I'm really good Mon-Fri. Weekends are made for fun.!! Nscrbug - I feel stupid saying this but I do not know the health benefits of Raw Almonds! I have been hearing about them for years with countless references in Runners World Magazine. I figured they were a staple item and jumped on the Raw Almond band wagon a few years ago. Although I must admit, dry roasted are far more tasty!

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When do you eat your "breakfast of champions"? Before a workout? After a workout? |

Science Nerd ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like a good plan. Any ideas on substitution for almonds? Do other nuts work as well? |

New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() PKKC - I will usually eat this at least one hour before my workout. I would prefer 2 hours if I'm up that early. Artemis- I'm sure other types of nuts provide positive health benefits, but I have read for years that Almonds pack the most punch and of healthy fats, proteins, antioxidants, Vitamin E, Potassium & Magnesium. All good stuff our bodies needs every day. |

I was wondering if you'd run into any other really good nuts in your reading. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Slightly different, but somewhat similar, I eat the exact same thing every morning after my workout - lowfat vanilla yogurt with raspberries and chopped raw almonds. I love this breakfast/snack and also eat it for dessert sometimes. I have a half serving of the yogurt, use frozen raspberries that I thaw while I workout and then have about 12 almonds chopped up. I never get bored of it and actually find myself looking forward to it. Your banana mixture sounds so good, I'm going to try that next! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Another slight variation (no idea on nutrient difference) Bananas and almond milk* in the blender with ice- Crazy good. throw some protein powder in (I like choc ) or PB, and, man oh man, it's dessert. (*only bummer is it is expensive, but so are raw almonds-- buy in bulk, but not more than a week at a time, unless you store them really well) |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() AMR31o - Thanks...I think I will try this and see how I feal. Been experimenting lately with pre-workout meals. Eating eat 2 hours prior won't be an issue with me since I always eat my pre-meals 2-3 hrs before. My post-workout "meal" has always been 1 cup oatmeal, w/ protein powder, 2 egg whites, seasonal fruit, almonds/walnuts & honey. What do you have? |
|

New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() I always go for protein as quickly as I can after the workout. I usually have a bottle of accelerade and a banana, lots of water. Protein shakes are great, as I'm sure you've found. I use a banana, fat free milk, fat free yogurt, peanut butter, a little honey and ice with vanilla powder. It's almost too good to be true but a great recovery drink. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As far as roasted vs Raw; most people feel that raw is better. Roasting changes the composition of the oils in the nuts. Walnuts are supposed to have a really good Omega 3/ Omega 6 ratio. Better than Almonds actually. Sunflower seeds are good, pumpkin seeds are really good too. I love to put these on salads. Peanuts are supposed to be the worst. Actually, peanuts are not nuts, they are legumes. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() From what I've read, raw and roasted almonds are very similar and roasting does not affect the oils or good fats. Roasting does, however, lower the amount of B vitamins. Both are good for you but raw gives you the extra thiamin and pantothenic acid (B vitamins) I eat raw almonds every day, love 'em |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() AMR310 - Just a follow-up. I've been eating this for my pre-workout meal this entire week and I don't know if it is all in my head, but, I have had amazing results in the pool with my energy. I've been drinking a smoothie (1 banana, 16-20 ozs. ea. skim milk & OJ) and eating 20 almonds at 3:00AM for our 5:00AM Masters swim. During the swim I have a 32oz. Nalgene bottle with 2 NUUN tablets and 1 GU. We average 3800-4000yds and I can maintain my intensity like never before. Simply amazing...I'm going to keep this up and truly see if this is what I was looking for. Thanks!!! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() YUM!!! Yes I love those too! I bet it would make a good smoothie too! I actually toss almonds in with some of my protein shakes! (Gets alittle gritty at the bottom) But tasty! |

New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() PKKC- That's awesome! Congrats! I'm so happy my breakfast of champions is working well for you! Keep up the good work! Sportyj - I love throwing some Almonds into the blender for protein shakes but maybe 1 out of 10 turn out just right. Usually kind of gritty, like you said. Have a great weekend! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Roasted v. Raw - the is enzymes. The belief is that by cooking the foods, including nuts, we destroy the enzymes in them. Here's a Wiki article (of course, not the most authoritative source, but there isn't any real data that I can find.) People swear by the raw food diet, but there's little research to support it. If you are allergic to almonds, try cashews. I make homemade cashew butter...YUMMMMMMY! It goes great on sprouted bread! Here's the recipe: Cashew Butter just look down the page (it's actually Alton Brown's Cashew Sauce, but the butter recipe is on there too) Happy eating!

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ok. it took me a while but I had to find almonds I LIKED. I had to go with the Jalepeno flavor blue diamonds. LOVE THOSE. (I hate plain almonds and just salted) Today is the first day I tried "the breakfast of champions". I feel good, I'm not hungry and I'm ready to give it a go!!!
Point of clarification needed: So eat the "breakfast of champions" before workout? And some type of protein or something after right?!

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Speaking of almonds...I just had to post this! I was snooping around by my co-worker's desk a few minutes ago (he's gone for the day...lol) and found a huge container of Emerald Cocoa Roast Almonds (Dark Chocolate flavor). I've never seen these before, so of course I had to try a few. WOW!!!! These were some of THE best tasting almonds I've ever had the pleasure of eating! They're not covered in actual chocolate...but more of a cocoa powder, then roasted...YUMMMM!!!! They are delish! I have to find me some. It was a large over-sized container...like something you'd find at Costco or Sam's Club. |
