Subject: Bike computers in the rain

I'm always leary about leaving my bike computer out in the rain.  I've never had one get damaged but last year during a race I got kinda over excited filling up my aerobottle and gave my computer a nice Gatorade bath.  About 2 miles later I realized the thing was not reading that I was moving.  I took it off, wiped the contacts and put it back and it worked fine but the rest of the race it was behind 2 miles.

I brought my bike in today to ride at lunch but a severe thunderstorm is rolling in so I decided against riding.  I went out and took my computer off and put in inside my truck.  Maybe I'm just paranoid.  Don't know why they don't specify "water resistant" on the computers or is that just understood?

I don't have anything fancy (cheap cateye) but I did over 100 miles through steady rain a couple years back.  The computer performed without a hitch...although I could not read it for a good part of the ride when my glasses were fogged.  Still use the same computer.  The only time I ever remove it is at the beginning of the year to replace the battery.

Did the 24 Hours of Booty ride a couple of weeks ago ( Yes, that's the official name ) and after a light rain for about an hour in the middle of the night my Cateye stopped showing distance and cadence, only registered time...... . Thought it would get better after things dried out but it never worked again. Peformance swapped out the Astrale 8 for a wireless Cateye Strada ( after over 1500 miles ! ) and I only paid the difference. Don't know if the rain caused the problem are not. Actually I don't think it did, who knows.

The issue with rain is usually due to the contact points getting wet, as opposed to water getting inside the computer. Put a dab of dielectric grease (available at most auto parts stores) on the contact points and you shouldn't have any problems.

It's funny you take off your computer and leave your bike out in the rain.

I had a Vetta wireless unit which died after I did one race in a torrential downpour.  They replaced it for me.
