So - its documented the host country generally does better than usual - however, its interesting to see how many Chinese unknowns are getting medals - plus the age debacle in gymnastics...its one thing to show the world you are developing and a strong/proud country..I just have doubts as to the methods behind some of this success.....given their history....

The Chinese have a storied history of doping. So when unknowns do very well (like the two women in the 200 fly), the accusations rear their heads. Add to this the fact that they Chinese notoriously don't compete internationally, except in the major championships, you never know what you're going to get. There's some speculation that their athletes don't compete outside their borders so that they can dope unnoticed, but after the last round of Chinese doping positives, WADA has cracked down and does more out-of-competition tests in China (and other places). Trouble is, they have to know who to test, and if they are squirreling away their athletes, it makes it difficult, I'd imagine.

They definately have home field advantage.  Remember, the home team gets top seeds in the events and all their athletes qualify.  For instance the Chinese Women Beach Volleyball team is the #1 see not May/Walsh.  The men's Basketball team automatically qualified for the games.  So basically they have a lot more athletes competing (albiet maybe not the best since some might not have qualified) so you have better odds of winning.  Some people compete better on a bigger stage.

The top 5 swimmers in each final get tested within something like 1 hour of the event, so I suppose time will tell.

Unless they're using Chinese testers

A lot of the doping occurs pre-season. Some doping drugs aid in fast recovery, and being able to push long distances. After a certain period of time (not sure how many weeks) these drugs become undetectable.

They are using the Michael Rassmussen technique.  Say you are one place and are actually in Mexico.
