Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Out for a morning run today and noticed a bike rider coming towards me. As we got closer, it was an older gentleman on a MTB out for a morning ride. Had his helmet on, but straps were tucked under the helmet! Thought that was unusual, have your helmet on but not use the straps. Any other interesting sightings during runs/rides? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's amazing that he made it to be old doing stupid things like that. I mean seriously what good will a helmet do if it flies off during an accident. My guess is he did this because there is a law that requires helmets to be on your head (just not attached). |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No kidding, just take it off... Umm, I usually just see a whole lot of farm land on my rides. I play "guess the crop" every mile! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Remember the scene in Billy Madison during one of his "graduation parties" where one of Billy's buddies is spraying a kid with a hose, and the poor little kid says, "please stop. i don't even know you." ? i basically saw that playing out on the side of the road. i *almost* stopped to take a picture with my phone. what i assumed to be the older brother put his little sister in the blue recycling bin at the end of their driveway, and was hosing her down. she was kinda just chilling in the bucket, and her brother looked like he was casually watering some plants. i was amused! ~B |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh, I see so many interesting things on my bike rides. This is why I love to ride my bicycle!!!!!!!!! Here are a few...click any image to enlarge: Here is a photo of my llama friend. I see him in a pasture on one of my fav routes. ![]() I pass John Edwards house on another one of my regular routes. He owns the largest homestead in Orange County, NC. Shortly after he dropped out of the primary, this sign hung on his gate: ![]() And, last but not least, this sign hanging in a convenient store. You know you're in the boonies when the prize for a local raffle is a "12 gauge Browning semi-automatic" shotgun - LOL! ![]() Photos taken with my cell phone camera, which is pretty crappy. Images uploaded using http://www.tinypic.com- I wonder how they make their money? Edited by keyone 2008-08-14 12:53 PM |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Earlier this summer I was on vacation in the 1000 Islands (Upstate New York). It was 5:30 AM a little foggy I was on a county road pedaling toward lake Ontario when I approached a large farm, as I got closer I am looking at what appear to be very large cows. I got right up to them and realized they were buffalo. This was really freaky because of the early morning fog and their faces are almost human looking except for the size. I did not expect to see Buffalo. chevy57 |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was on a new bike route, and went by a small cemetery (not too unusual in the rural areas here). The first headstone I did the quick math with - they had died young, like 8 or 9 years old. Then I see a few more youngsters - no one is over 20. I start to feel a little sad and creeped out - WTH, a whole cemetery of children? What kind of disaster struck here? Then I notice some names. "Fluffy", "Rover"... Yeah. A pet cemetery. Duh. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Last week during a run, I saw something clearly dead (and big) in the road. As I got closer the smell hit me as it had been picked clean pretty good by the local buzzards but then I noticed that it was a snake. A BIG snake. a REALLY BIG snake. This sucker's head was the size of a Chipotle burritto (I had to use something you guys would be familiar with). It's body (guess base don the ribs and what was left of it) was at least 6" in diameter. It HAD to be an escaped python or boa. Glad it was dead. Edited by TriRSquared 2008-08-14 4:10 PM |

Member ![]() | ![]() I live a few blocks from a hiker/biker trail and regularly walk/run with my dog there - aka people watching while exercising the dog. I cannot tell you the number of times I have seen adults wearing their helmets backwards. They are usually riding a hybrid, perhaps with their kids in tow. But I always wonder, when you put this on, didn't you thing that something just felt wrong. But, this past weekend I saw a dude who took the cake. Backwards and unclipped. Now it clearly couldn't do anything if it tried. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Last week as I was riding into work (5:30am) on a trail, I saw a baby mountain lion cross my trail...later on in the ride, mama popped up next to me, about 5 feet from me on the side of the trail, I think she was asleep and I scared her...I know she scared me (because I screamed)...I pedalled fast, she ran away...I now take a well lit road to work. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() An alligator. Just sunning itself on the bike path here in South Carolina. I almost ran him over. And a few months earlier on the same bike path, what we call a wildcat. I guess that's like a really scrawny bobcat? |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was out for a bike ride with the family, and we hopped off to take a 5 minute walk down a trail. My 5 year old daughter suddenly pointed to something white on the ground and said. "What was that?, It came from the sky and it hit my head". Within seconds we were being pelted by marble sized hail. Of course we had left our helmet by the bikes. We dove under a tree to wait it out, but the trees didn't help much. Hail that size, even falling from a branch 20 feet up, still hurt a lot. We all had welts after that. 10 minutes later it was sunny when we ventured out again. |

He was out w/a girl who I would guess was his girlfriend. She had her's on right. I just can't believe that neither of them noticed that something wasn't right. (Or maybe she did and was working on figuring out a way out! lol) |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was just starting out my trail run on a very overgrown trail that I could hardly make out with 2 foot grasses leaning over the trail. I had to stare at the ground right in front of me to make out what I was stepping on. Suddenly I noticed a snake darting across the trail. My immediate thought was "Don't step there, or you're dead" and subsequently almost tripped as I tried to adjust my step in mid-stride. It turned out only to be a harmless garter snake but for a while afterwards, I was wondering if rattlers frequented the area and what my chances were. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just last night I was out on a run on a path around a golf course and a fox jumped out right in front of me. We both stopped and just stared at each other until I clapped my hands and he ran away. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I see lots of great stuff on runs, because I often run while traveling (and that's not counting the hallucinations). Most recently, I saw four 60+ year old women, each about 4 feet tall, wrestling a bull to the ground (don't know why) in the middle of a field. I was on Jeju Island in Korea. On the other hand, during my swim workouts, I'm pretty sure the funniest (and most pathetic) thing in the water is me, and I can only imagine what that looks like (but I try not to). |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was riding down a county road near my house when I heard rustling in the brush next to the fence. I though, oh crap, a dog. I glanced over and it was a 300lb wild hog running along the fence beside me. Only in south Texas... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I guess my sightings are pretty tame compared to mountain lions, alligators and wild hogs - OH MY! |

Melon Presser ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Will Smith, Marg Helgenberger, pretty much any famous beach volleyball player, and a bunch of others. Oh yeah, plenty of porn stars. Honestly in these parts you don't pay too much attention anymore, usually it's just 'cause you were looking around at that moment and saw someone familiar. P.S. Other people pointed out the porn stars to me. I have no idea who they are. Actually, other people pointed out most of the stars, too. When should I stop digging? Even if it's (mostly) true? Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() From my RR of a Century Ride: My two favorite scenes from this: 1) At a graveyard, a sign that read "please see the commisioner before picking or digging grave". 2) A lady weedwacking the grass that was growing around the car that was parked in the middle of the yard. Good times. I love riding my bike in the country. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just moved, so I'm loving all my new routes. The other day, the road stretched long in front of me (unusual in the mountains, but there you have it). There were three deer, mama and two youngsters I think, just chillin' out. They were watching me, I was watching them, for almost ten minutes. It was cool. They bounded off (but I got to see them still watching me from the cover of trees), and I looked down - right as I ran directly over top a teensy tiny itty bitty snake! Both the snake and I went "Whoa!" and jumped - fortunately, opposite directions, as I think I would have squished the little dude. My fav story, though, is from where I used to live. The town has some internationally famous rock climbing cliffs about a mile and half from my house. It is gorgeous there, and I love(d) running that road. It was fun seeing all the climbers walking up the trails (I can't see the actual cllmbs), but cooler than that was listening to them. I heard five languages in four groups one day - Italian, German, French, Russian, and something I couldn't identify. No English that day. I've heard lots of Asian languages, lots of European languages, a pretty big handful of which I couldn't pin down. Very, very cool. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Saw a young and older buck getting ready to cross the road while I was biking in a heavily wooded part of town. Although seeing deer in not unfamiliar, it was the fact that I actually became nervous. I could not tell what their intentions were. Actually, I felt like I was getting ready to be charged and would have to defend myself with the bike. As I rode closer I started singing Hendrix hoping to scare them away. It worked. They did a 180 and ran into a nearby yard, waited as I passed, and crossed the road behind me. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was on a hill training ride a couple of weeks ago, and while on a paved nature trail back in some woods a doe flies across the path right in front of us. I mean RIGHT in front. Had we been going any faster, she would have taken us out! |
