I'm looking at used bikes and was wondering if that's a bad idea! I found a 2005 Trek 1000 barely used on Craigslist for $300. That's a heck of a price on a road bike. I'm headed tonight to take a look at it. Is there anything I should watch for?

I bought a used Trek 1200 from a club member. Look for dents, dings. Check the brakes and chain and tires.

I bought a used QR Kilo from a tri club member. It was practically brand new. He never got adjusted to riding aero despite many times to the LBS for fitting. His back just wouldn't let him ride aero for more than a few miles so he rarely used the bike.

Look for dents, dings, beat up components, wheels out of true by more than a small amount, excess dirt/grime, etc. Also be sure the bike is not too large or small - i.e., if you're 5 feet tall, don't get a 58" bike, conversely if you're 6 feet tall, don't get a 48" frame. Fit can be adjusted only so much.

I've bought (and sold) used bikes a ton through EBay and other sights.  As long as you get a chance to physically see it and make sure it fits well and that there are no problems with it, there is no reason not to get a used one.  It is perhaps the best way to get into the sport on a budget.

That sounds like a pretty good deal.

You really need to know what size you are looking for.

I've bought two bikes via Ebay.

Go to your LBS and inspect one of their bikes before you do this on the used one.  (It'll give you a reference point. )

2005 is new enough that you shouldn't have problems with degraded rubber and I think the 1000 was all aluminum.

Look for dings in the aluminum (forks, chainstays, seatstays, top tube, down tube, handlebars, and seat post)

Look for cracks at all of the joints (might take it to the LBS for an inspection for this).

Spin the wheels.  Do they wobble (left-right or up-down)?  Do they spin freely?  Look over the rims and look for broken spokes.

Lift the front wheel off the ground and turn the handlebars/fork left-right.  Does it rotate easily?  Does the fork slide up/down in the head tube?  Look at the gaps between the rear wheel and the chainstays and then the seatstays for misalignment.

Look at the derailleurs.  Are they scratched, bent, or loose?  Check the rear derailleur hanger too.  Look at the brake calipers.  Do they return to a centered position after applying the brakes?

Shift up/down through the gears and squeeze the brakes.  Do these controls feel smooth?  How easily does the crank rotate?

Finally, look over the paint.  Any places where the paint is chipped or rubbed off?

This is great advice Thanks so much! THe frame size is the first thing I"ve been looking at when considering a bike. And this one just happens to be in my size. I'm short and it's hard to find used bikes for the short ones like me!

I'm going to the LBS this afternoon to see a new one. I"m gonna go take it for a test ride this afternoon.

I really want a bike. I've been riding my 30+ pound mountain bike!

chosen,

I just bought a closeout Javelin Sizzano yesterday and they still have a couple models left but only in small sizes.  Not sure what size you need but it may be worth the phone call to them.  $449 + $30 shipping is a great price for an entry level tri bike.

Hmm, good to know about the javelin. Are they decent bikes??

Looks like all they have left are 48 cm. I'm 49-50. Would it make that much of a difference?

Check the headset for "play" to see if it's worn. Squeze the front brake and try to push the bike forward and back. See if it rattles. If so, the headset is worn out. Not a huge deal, but is another sign of wear.

Tears in the saddle are common.

Run your finger nail across the rims on the braking surface to see if they're scored or smooth. Dirt and black crud are OK, scores and deep scratches aren't.

Coast on the bike and see if the pedals stop spinning (they should) or are pulled along by the chain (you can't coast w/o pedalling). This checks the rear freehub integrity.

Measure two pins on the chain and see any 2 pins are exactly 12inches apart. Checks for chain stretch.

As others have mentioned, any obvious signs that the bike has been wrecked and you head for the door despite the good price, M'Kay?

most people seem to be happy with them and for the price and 105 components, it's hard to beat.  not sure about the size, maybe someone else can answer that..

I bought a used Lemond Zurich from an aquaintance. Its an '04 and Im the third owner. I also knew the first and knew he barely rode it. The guy who sold it to me rode it quite a bit for 18 mos or so. He let me ride it and take it to the LBS for an assessment which was a big help since Im not a bike gear-head. The LBS guy loved it and being a former TREK/Lemond salesperson also approved the price. That made me feel alot better about the whole deal. Loving the bike.

Bought a 4 year old Specialized thorugh eBay. Found out about it on Active and was able to get positive referrals on the guy selling it (one of those who buys a new bike every few months and doesn't use his old ones) and was able to get a good deal for my 1st year of Tri's. Of course I'm already doing the math of what I could sell it for plus money I normally get for birthday/Xmas and I start drooling

Bought a used Felt B12 tri-bike, turned out much better then the New road bike I bought before that.

The key to buying used or new is to know exactly what you're after - do the research.  Know how to check the bike - at the very least take it for a decent ride and run through all the gears front & back, check the brakes, etc.

Congrats! Enjoy your new treasure. I bought my bike used (Felt) but I knew the owner and where she bought the bike. I'm still riding it 4 years later.
