Subject: The morning after

Just wanted to write a few things while the thoughts are fresh.

First off, it was so cool meeting all the BTers here.  We had a great time and it really added to the race experience.  Last year I didn't know anyone here but this time I was here with 50 or so of my BT friends.

I have to tell you guys that I suck with names and meeting 25 or 30 of you this weekend overwhelmed my name-face memory banks.  So for eveyone that said "Hey Mike" on the course and I was not able reply with your name, I'm sorry.  Some of your names I actually do remember but by the time my brain retrieved your name from memory, it was too late.

Anyway, here's lesson #1 for those of you doing this race next year.  Get to know the other BTers who are doing the race and learn their first name.

The BT Cheat Sheet that I made up with people's names, screen names and pictures was very helpful too.  Someone, I'm not sure who, brought name tags for all the BTers and we had BT/IMKY tee-shirts made up which made it really easy to find/identify the BTers for the dinner and practice s/b/r.  So lesson #2 is to make up cheet sheets, bring name tags and order tee shirts.

For the second year in a row I stayed at the Galt House and, while it is pricey, I highly reccomend staying here.  Last year I was here by myself and stayed in a standard room and this year my wife and kids came and we got the suite.

The line up for swim start was different than last year.  This year I got to the swim start at least 30 minutes earlier than last year that the line was 3 or 4 times as long!  Evidently word go out that if you want to be in the front of the starts, you need to get there very early.  I don't really see an advantage to being near the front of the pack but I guess that is a personal preferance.  I was fortunate to meet up with 3 other BTers before the swim so we enjoyed some good coversation while cooling our jets (for an hour and a half) waiting to start.

I'll have much more to ramble on about in my race report.  Which brings me to my last reccomendation #3 read every race report minning for the gems that you can use.

Oops, just thought of #4.  Do NOT put your biking shoes on in the T1 changing tent!  By the time I got to my bike, the cleats were filled with mud/grass.  I tried to wash them out with my water bottle but lost a lot of time being unable to get clipped in due to the mud in my cleats.  This was just plain stupid.  I should have just put them on the bike and put them on at the bike mount or, if you wear socks, use rubber cleat covers till you get up on the concrete.

~Mike

good points Mike I wish I had more time to talk with people, with so many BT people here my A.D.D kicks in and I'm running around attempting to talk with everyone even if it's only for a few minutes..

Just packing up now for the trip home.

The T-Shirts were a fantastic idea and would totally recommend doing that again.  Really enjoyed getting to meet all of the other BTers and having so many people to root for along the way.  You are an amazing group of Ironmen and Ironwomen!!  The conditions were tough out there, but Ironman is effing hard and you should all feel extra proud that you pushed through it.

T-shirts were a great idea.  I was able to spot some of you at the practice swim on Friday; which was nice.

I didn't experience the problem with the mud in the cleats, but I have speedplays and maybe they just self cleaned when I clipped in...not sure.

hope to meet more of you guys in Wisconsin this weekend.

I had speedplay also.  Maybe by the time I got to T1 everthing was muddier.  I'll never make this mistake again that's for sure.

Good luck in Wisconsin!

How is everyone's stomach? Mine still feels like I have a hangover. I get hungry, eat, and then feel nauseous and miserable for an hour. Thats pretty much been the story for the last 2 days.

And, I have a race report up at the blog below if anyone is bored to absolute tears for 5 minutes and wants something to read.

I'm eating TUMS/Roliads like they are candy over here!  Tummy is not a happy camper at all.

I had to go get soup today. It's 90 degrees here but soup is all I could choke down. Weird, didn't have this last year. I am sure the hunger will set in eventually.

No, hubby and I are doing Triple T in May as a team, then I think he and my brother in law are doing Lou next year. It is actually ON my daughter's B'day next year so that's kinda rough. I will most likely be there as a sherpa though so I'll bring some good old BT love for you guys!!

yeah, on monday my stomach was wavering.  i'd not be hungry then all of a sudden be famished the eat half a sandwich then be full...2 hours later the cycle repeated.

today (tuesday) I have more of an appetite back, but still not what I thought after burning through 10-12k calories on sunday.  i've been downing ensure like they're going out of style.  it's only 4:00pm and I've already drank 5 of them (that's 350 calories x 5) plus lunch and that's not even close to what I need to be eating today from a calorie perspective...

i think tomorrow (in addition to my regular meals) I may try to drink 1 ensure an hour and see how that works.

Maybe I shouldn't have eaten a full rack of ribs last night though, and went to a Chinese buffet for lunch today. Two things I have not done for the last year. Should have postponed those for a few days.

two cents wort on antiacids:  We had a doctor come and talk to our bike club about the phisiology of exercise.  The interesting thing is this:  your body generates lactic acid during exercise.  Your body needs to neutralize this acid - so taking tums during or before exercise buffers your system and helps you neutralize the acid sooner leading to better performance and less muscle soreness.

my 2 cents worth - perhaps on the day after your body is slightly acidic and thus you are needing the anticids?  I'm no doctor - but that does not stop me from having crackpot theories

I had bad GI issues the last 30 miles of the bike and the entire run, and only kept down about 20 oz of water from mile 80 to the finish. I almost passed out in the porta-potty (due to dizziness, not smell). Needless to say, 30 minutes after the finish, I was craving Lays potatoe chips! I ate a half a bag and felt much, much better! Appetite has been good, and I'm not sore at all! But why would I be when I walked half of the run? Oh well, more lessons learned out there on the course.

It was great meeting most of you. I had one friend that accompanied me to the race, but not my husband or other family. However, I felt constantly supported from all of my BT friends. In fact, when I passed over the Ford Motivational Station, I had a message from a fellow BT'r. I still don't know who wrote it, but THANK YOU!!!! It helped to get my *ss moving again! You guys rock!

I still am planning on a year off of the IM distance. Perhaps IMWI in 2010???

Speedplay X-series cleats do have an issue with mud getting stuck in the cleats.  Speedplay Zeros do not have that same issue as the design is slightly different.
