Subject: What to wear

Ok, I need to order stuff for my first tri.  At the very least I am going to buy tri shorts.  I understand I can swim bike and run in them right?  Also I am thinking about a tri top...  Not really sure of the benefits.

Here is my concern the Sprint in at the end of September in New England.  What to wear if its cold out?  I plan to rent a weatsuit so I can just wear the tri shorts and tank but what do I put on if the weATHER IS IN THE 50'S.  Cold for just a tank especially on the bike.  Please help as I dont want/can't spent money on anything I dont need...

I own a long sleave running shirt...  This I assume is an option...

For your first tri I wouldn't go purchase a top.  You can use a running shirt or biking shirt with no issues.  The only reason for a tri top in my understanding is better aerodynamics (not normally a concern at your first tri ).

For my first tri I wore a bike shirt and put it on at T1 so that it was dry to begin with and didn't take long to put on.  My socks on the other hand took forever, but this is how we learn!

I would get tri shorts.  And yes, you can wear them for the entire event (s,b,r).

The socks are easy if you put them on before the race then just roll them off and then when it comes to the race just roll them on.

They are not completely necessary, but the benefit of a tri top and tri shorts is that you can wear them for all 3 legs of the race and not have to change during transitions.  If it's cold, you can just throw another shirt on over your tri top in T1..... but personally, I would only do this if it was well below 50 degrees, and not at all if it was sunny.

Putting on a shirt or jersey in T1 will more than likely frustrate you. You are wet; it is dry.

Why not just get a top you can do all three in, like the shorts? What would you use for the swim if you didn't have a tri top? OK maybe you are a boy, I didn't think about this. but I'd still recommend a tri top to avoid messing with changing in transition.

Some people will bring a light cycling jacket if it's chilly, or arm warmers. But for a sprint, you may not see much of that.

FWIW I like the one piece suit.  I dont have to worry about it riding up and creating the 'man-kini'.   super comfortable, mesh on the sides, pocket in the back and the front zipper is nice.   Fits really well under the wetsuit too.

I have a waterproof windbreaker for if it rains that packs into a little bag and has a belt so I dont have to wear it if I dont need it and I would either put on a t-shirt if it was too cold or get some arm warmers.

Check out F2R.com for wetsuit rental.  very happy with them.  Ill probably end up buying it because it fits really well.  But you have 29 days (20 when you factor in delivery time) to check it out and practice with it before your race,

Actually I am going to be renting/using a wetsuit.  I guess I could wear my biking top under the wetsuit.  It should stay dry right????

No. It will be wet.
But I have seen people do that.

No, it will not stay dry, but it shouldn't matter.  It will dry out quickly enough on the bike.

Ummm...no, it won't stay dry under the wetsuit. Wetsuits are designed to let a small amount of water into the suit...your bodyheat warms that water and this is what essentially keeps you warm. I would get a tri top and be done with it. Bring your long-sleeved running shirt along with you and keep it in transition. If you feel chilly, just throw it on for the bike (but it will probably be flapping around in the wind). Then by the time you come back in for the run transition, you'll most likely be warm enough to take it off for the run.

OK, I'll put in a few extra hours this month at work..  Can somebody recommend a pair of tri short and a top (for a guy)...  Yea money is an issue...  Plus it is my first race so no big $ commitments from me at this point.

Thanks-

Well...I won't recommend specific brands, since I'm a female and wouldn't have the faintest idea about what is best for a guy. But here are some websites you can check out for good deals on tri apparel.

Hope this helps!
