Subject: gearing for a bike trainer
Thanks to bear I was able to get my first tribike cheap. Good news it was cheap bad news it had champy parts. champy is not bad but my bike trainer wheel is shimano. They have rear cassettes that will fit on a shimano hub with have the champy spacing.

Now I am not sure if I should go with 12-23 or 12-28. I am thinking if I ever get a race wheel I would want to get one with a shimano hub because I not sure if I will go with campy on any other race bike, and I could reuse the cassette.

On the trainer would I be better off with the 23 so I would have to work on the hills or would 28 be better because it would be more of a real world environment for me? I guess that is ultimately the question.

FYI I plan on riding the IMKY course alot this winter on the computrainer since bike is my limiter and I suck on the hills.

I'm a little confused.

If you are getting a new cassette and want to use it to ride outside in hills, I'd suggest a 12-27. It makes hills easier. On a trainer it doesn't really matter as much. I do think having similar gearing to what you will use outside on the trainer is smart. Stronger cyclists tend to use tighter cassettes. If cycling is your limiter go with the 12-27.

Why not use the wheel that is on the bike on the trainer and just get a trainer tire? I don't think if the bike is campy you can use a different wheel that is Shimano unless I'm missing what you are trying to do.

Shimano will not work with Campy. Campy's better anyway. Ride what you have with an old tire. Dont worry about gearing, just ride.

I think he might be talking about getting one of those "crossover" cassettes that is meant to fit on a Shimano hub but the spacing and rear gears are Campy compatable. I've heard of them but don't know how well they work.

Exactly. American classic has one. I have a wheel with a trainer tire on it so I can bike inside and outside without much trouble. I figure I need to get used to the tri bike and do not want to burn threw tires and create a mess. I have the computrainer so it is like riding outside with hills so I am not sure if training going up hills with a 23 would make me better on the hills.

I just buy extremely cheap tires and use them on my trainer. Performance bikes has tires really cheap on sale pretty often.

forget this other wheel you keep talking about.

why can't you just put a low-end tire on the rear wheel of your tri bike for use on the trainer? then you could still ride outside for as long as the weather permits.

i'm not familiar with computrainers, but should the rubber from a regular tire really be flying off and making a mess if it is set up properly?
