Subject: Pre Race Meds? Need Help.
I have two broken ribs and a sprained wrist. I did it on tue 9-02 and I have my first Oly on 9-21. I have a scrip for some good meds but I am worried about taking them.

I normally take nothing unless I am in a ton of pain. I read the thread about taking even advil before training sessions to help when you need it and it seems to be a nono.

Should I take something to help me through or just grit it out. I am sure I will have some adrenaline pumping to help me out but with only about 2 and a half weeks of healing time I don't know how I will fair.

My options are between taking an OTC, nothing at all, or take my scrip. I already plan at a friends recomendation of taking 400mg of HTFU before the race just wanted to know what you guys thought about adding to it.

Thanks

If you are feeling that rough, why race and risk something worse?  Is this one race that important?

Yeah it is important to me. It is and has been my A race for the season. I have been looking forward to it for it being my first Oly distance race. It the Athletes for a Cure Tri and I have a bunch of insentive based donations raised for Colon Cancer. My FIL lost his battle to colon cancer and I am racing in his honor and also for the donations. I don't think I can do much damage with the ribs. I am sure I could pull another muscle or something somewhere trying to compensate but its not like I have a partially torn ligament that I could do further damage to.

That and I paid 150 to do the race and though it is for a good cause and would love to donate to the program I did spend the last of my tri money to do this race.

Take the Advils (ibuprofens) and just stay hydrated.  It's is pretty safe and well tolerated.  I had a small tear in my cartilage but had been training for a half for awhile, he just told me to schedule the surgery for after the race and that it was OK to run and take the ibu.  He said if it hurts too bad, drop out but did not have any problem with it.   The race went well and so did the surgery.  Hopefully you will not feel it too bad.  I have heard broken ribs can hurt quite a bit.

I think the problem is when people use them regularly when racing to reduce their pain that it is bad.

Having raced with broken ribs before, I can tell you that you definitely want to take something before the race.  It is going to hurt.  Whether you take ibuprofen or the prescription it up to you.  I would see how much pain you're in at the time and take as little as you need to get through.
