Subject: New to Highlands Ranch and need some suggestions
Hi all! After taking some time off due to a new position at work and relocating to Denver I am interested in getting back into the training thing! I have been running alot (now some Plantar fasiitis has slowed me down). I have a marathon that may have to be a half if the feet don't cooperate, any recommendations for podiatists?

I have looked into the Masters at Northridge but found the times to not be convenient for my schedule. It seems that the elite group is the only one in the am and I am not 'elite'. Have I missinterpruted this?

I am interested in riding some before winter gets here. Can you suggest any good rides or groups to ride with?

Thanks for the help! See ya on the road, or in the pool!

A couple years back I was dealing with PF issues.  I found a good podiatrist in Parker, Bill Farrett.  He's an ultra runner and will work with you to get you running again.  His office phone is 303.805.5156.

Occasionally there will be posts on the MB with group rides...so check the message board.  Also, I don't belong to these clubs but you can check out Parker Tri Club and Bike Source.

Welcome!

Welcome....I just moved here as well and am trying my best to discover what is available in terms of training!

One of my coworkers rides with Highlands Ranch Cycling Club -- you can pick up their rides on the weekend from Bike Source on County Line & C470, or at Chatfield.  He says that they ride all winter long and last weekend, they did a Saturday and Sunday ride.  I'm hoping to catch up with them once my bike arrives, as I'm going through some serious withdrawal.  At any rate, good luck getting your PF straightened out and finding some groups to train with....

I'll second Dr. Farrett for help with PF.

I used Dr. Erik Thelander last year for some toe issues and really liked him.  303.632.3668  He's in Centennial at the Centennial Medical Plaza on Arapahoe.

I THIRD the suggestion for Dr. Farrett. He's awesome. As an ultra-distance runner, he gets the fact that you want to train through injuries and will work with you on how to do that.

He also has an office attached to Sky Ridge, so you don't have to go all the way to Parker.

As for Northridge Masters, check out the Triathlon-specific masters program on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (5:45am). This is not just an "elite" group - there is a wide range of abilities and the coach, Susan Williams (bronze medal in triathlon in Greece in 2004), will put you in the lane that suits your swim times. I have been to the "elite" group practices, and unless you can consistently swim 1:40/100 yards or faster, that's not the group for you.

Just one thing. Bernie (president of HRCC) does not allow tri bikes or aerobars (on road bikes) in their rides.  This is why I eventually stoped ridding with the group.  I got tired of putting my aerobars back on my bike.  That being said they rides are gun and the people are pretty nice for Roadies.  But they are typical roadies and can be snobbish and look down on everyone.

That is just my opinion.  I rode with them for 1 full season.  And I was a cyclist so I have been around the snobbish cyclists.

By the way welcome...

No way!  That is a huge bummer-- I refuse to take my aerobars off.  I absolutely cannot get them back the way I want them if I do that.  And what difference do they make if we just don't use them? (Is my bike unstable or something?)  Well, I guess that eliminates that club.  I'm definitely going to have to beg to be included on some BT rides.

A PT not, a podiatrist but when I was having achilles problems I went to see Mark Plaatjes in Boulder and he helped me out.  He is an ex- world marathon champion and co-owner of the Boulder Running Company so he specializes in the biomechanics of running.  A little farther than Parker but a great option for helping get rid of the PF.

I don't ride with any clubs, but my wife and I frequently head out on ride from HR and have several up our sleeves of varying lengths.  Feel free to PM us and we'd be happy to share them - or you can join in as we plan one.  Although we are finishing our seasons in the next week, so it may be a while until I'm out....
