Do many of you ride with groups?

If you do, why don't they start as soon as the sun comes up...like 7am? Most I've seen start at 8:30-9am.

 just curious.

I like to get up and get it done.

Yeah one of the reason I've never gotten into the large-group rides is that they seem to start at like 9:00am Sunday. Which is one time of the week that I definitely can't do.

Start one. A simple sign at your LBS or local tri or even roadie club and I bet you'll have one going in a month. There are plenty of people like you.

Keep your eye on the GA forum, Latrina, as there are often early morning weekend rides posted.  Better yet, decide on a time, place and route and post a ride there yourself so you know it will work for you .

I ride alone all the time, it does get really boring, i will have to find a nice early group here for next year.

We have a large organization who has their rides later in the day, that doesn't work too well with my family and me.  On the other hand, I have found a group of roadies and they go out at 7:00, but just changed to 7:30 AM on weekends and they have smaller group rides throughout the week one at 5:30AM and one at 6:30PM (soon to be 6:00) M-Th.  I feel very fortunate, but it took me awhile to learn who rides and where things happen.

I'm keeping my eye there But I'll be honest. I'm intimidated riding with other folks just a tad. I'll do it - but I don't want anyone to feel like they have to wait around for me. I'm new at cycling and slow by many of your standards. (14-15mph). But I'll ride

and I may just do that. i.e. start one.

Yeah, I know, just keep at it.  First time I went out with my group I got dropped pretty darn fast.   Week by week, month by month, could hang with them a little longer, then a little longer.  The only way to get better is to keep doing it, and it may take quite a while.  But you will get better, that much is certain

And then there's days, even after 2 or more years, when the fast guys decide to let everyone know they are still fast, and even going 24 mph all you see is them disappearing into the distance.......

I wouldn't worry so much about being dropped.  Last night I was riding with a 55 minute 40K (that's a solo 27.1 mph for 24.8 miles no draft!) guy last night and he still got dropped once this year.  Some days the group get's frisky and your legs are shot from a previous day, it happens.  It does stink when they wait around.  I would rather just find my way back.

There is a general progression and I think you do best by finding groups slightly better than yourself, when you  get faster find another group.  You do need to get comfortable with riding in the draft.  The most important thing is to be alert and be predictable.

We start at 7:30 and then 8:00 later on. It's mostly due to give people at least 30-45min of day light before the ride starts so they can ride to the store.

Group rides around here start at various times.

In the summer earlier, in the winter later so black ice melts and it is a little warmer. Much easier to start to ride when it is 30 and not 20.

Keep looking around. I just met a guy who knows all the local rides. I now have opportunities for 4 a week..now we are talking.
