Subject: Swapped wheels and cassette, now my bike won't shift right.
Ok, so I swapped wheels from my originals to my new Hed Jet C2's and now my bike keeps jumping between gears.  When it's in the highest (smallest gear) it takes clicking the shifter twice to get it into second, then you can go all the way up throught the rest of the gears to 10th, and it stays pretty stable in each gear.  Then on the way back down I can't get it to click back into first.  There is some hesitation in the 5-6 shift, but that's always been there.  I would definitely like to have all my gears available.  I've been trying to figure out adjustments using this http://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.htmlbut I don't know exactly which adjustment needs to be made now.  I would appreciate any assistance you all can give me.

Ok, I may have it right now...but it still seems to be a touch off.  Is this just a "why 105 rear deraileurs are inexpensive?

And, either way, did you do it correctly with all the spacers in the right place?

Mine has a thin spacer that goes on the hub body first...

Yep, same cassette, the only thing I couldn't switch over was the little dust cover type thing from my old wheels. I got the spacers in right after I saw the last one.  The old wheels had a big open hub with grease spilling out of it that coated everything and made the last spacer hard to see.  I've always had a bit of trouble shifting between 4-5 or 5-6, can't remember which.

ETA: I know that the actual rim is wider than the old rim, but I don't know if the hub was wider...is that possible?

What did you do to get it right? I just switched my old cassette to new wheels and am having the same issues.

I followed the instructions on the website I linked to in my first post and then just kept adjusting the cable tension, and one screw at a time.  Good luck, just takes a little bit of time.

I have shifting problems when I switch from my road wheel to the trainer wheel. It's common. A minor adjustment to the barrel aduster at the cable sheath end takes care of it. The screws on the derailleur adjust the maximum amount the pulleys can move so you don't throw the chain off the end of the cassette. One does inboard side, the other outboard.

If you like tinkering with your bike yourself, get Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance or Zinn and the Art of Triathlon Bike Maintenance by Lennard Zinn. It walks you through EVERYTHING.

Even with the same brand, size and everything else, you should expect to have to re-adjust the rear derailleur when switching wheels.  A difference of a millimeter can throw things off.

And Shimano 105 derailleurs are actually pretty good Smile

Realized just how different the width of these hubs is: My old wheels would pretty much just fall out when you loosened the skewer, these wheels you actually have to spread the chainstays (?) apart a bit to remove the wheels.  But the new wheels are so much nicer.  I'm also glad that I now know how to get things adjusted properly.
