I'm doing my first tri next month.  It's a sprint.  Will I be the only person riding a mountain bike?

I doubt it... You will see all types. Just bring what you have race hard and finish.

You will have fun!

Probably not is my guess. Some of the sprints around here have everything from $2-3,000 Cervelos with carbon tires to mountain bikes with knobbies. Depends on the sprint, some have more tri bikes, some only have a couple tri bikes.

Bike types will run the gamut from high end tri bikes to mountain bikes to bikes that look like the only thing they're missing is a basket on the front.

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Rode my first sprint on a mountain bike.  It had combination road/mtn tires at the time.  I had so much fun that I went ahead and got a road bike.  You'll be fine, just don't expect to have a "fast" bike split.  Enjoy it!

As a matter of fact, because I was riding a mountain bike lots of people passed me, and many, many of them said things like - "keep it up"  or "looking good"  or "good job" or "you're doing good"  -- all kinds of encouraging stuff.  That may be part of the reason I got so hooked on this sport.  Mostly the people in it are fine folks.

finished my first sprint today on a full suspension mountain bike and like someone said you will have a slower bike split than some but faster than others but you won't be last. one of the volunteers even said man santa cruz is sure well represented at this race as there were several Blurs and
superlights not the fastest but good enough. My goal was to finish and if this is your first race it should be yours as well so i say go for it.

A friend of mine just did his first sprint in July on a mountain bike.  He averaged 18.4 MPH and passed a whole bunch of guys on fancy, expensive tri bikes!   don't think they were very happy.  I can't wait to see what he'd do on a road bike!  So ride your mountain bike proudly- you will almost certainly have company.

Thanks for all of your responses.  Since it is my first tri, my goal is to finish and to have fun.  I'm not to concerned about what my times are.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that!  I've gotten a few under my belt and for the most part my goals are to simply finish with a smile on my face, a song in my heart, and not having the folks from the med tent come rushing me as I cross the finish line.

That's exactly the way to do it. Don't even wear a watch!! Just do a little carpe diem and enjoy the experience.

I did my first race on a single-speed Bianchi San Jose. We're talking fenders, rack, the works.

Just have fun and don't worry about the bike.

I did my first (sprint) Triathlon on my daughters full suspension Shwinn mountain bike purchased from Costco.  Got passed like I was stopped by many road bikes, but held my own with the other off roads bikes.  Probably 25% mountain bikes, I was surprised how many actually.

 Just have fun.

As many others have said before use whatever you have and then decide after your race what bike to upgrade to.  I have seen a large number of mountain bikes used for Sprints so don't let that bother you.  Go out and have a great race.

 Good luck with your first!

I am a distance runner, currently suffering a stress fx of my tibia. Because of my cross training, biking and swimming. I decided to actually train for a sprint tri next June.

I was concerned about riding a Trek hybrid. I'm glad I found this site to read and see that riding a hybrid is not a big deal. I wanted to make sure I actually liked doing a tri before I upgraded my bike.
