i have a set of clincher type tires with cyclocross tread on them. i want to replace them with a smooth tread type. is it possible to change them? can i do it myself or does a LBS do it because of special tools needed?

Nah, easy to do it by yourself.   Just get the one side off with levers as usual, the other side should pop right off.

You can do it yourself-easy.  You'll need tire/tube, tire levers (set of three), and a source for air.    This is a skill you MUST learn for yourself.  LBS will usually charge 5.00/tire.  Questions/comments-just ask the forum.  Good Luck!

Yes- virtually any 700c tire will fit.  Usual size is 700x23 or 700x25c.  Sometimes the tires can be a bit 'stubborn' to get on.  THAT'S OK!  Just take your time and only try to put a little bit of tire back on the rim at a time.  If it gets stuck-make sure ALL the air is out of tube, then go along the entire tire and pinch the sidewalls together.  This often will give you just enough slack to get the sucker on.

If your new tires come folded up in a package, it is best to open the package and pull them into a round position like tires are and let them sit for a couple hours. Somehow for me it makes a big difference to the ease of getting new tires on the rims having them come to round prior to putting them on.
