Signing up for Ironman Wisconsin 2010

If you are not from the Wisconsin area, you hav to travel there anyway to sign up ( I agree that it will be unlikely that there will be online spots, and if there are, chances of getting one are slim)  so  suggest doing what I did, go up for a few days, swim the gatorade swim (Saturday morning) so you know the swim course then go for a bike ride doing a loop of the bike course, a lot of hills, and all the downhills end in sharp turns.  It is well worth it to expeience it in advance and get a volunteer spot in the line on Monday morning.

If you volunteer, the only way you won't get a spot is if every single athlete that does the race signs up on Saturday before the race.

Here's when/how the slots are made available:

Day before the race - Current year's athletes can get their voucher for next year

Day after the race - Current year's volunteers can get their voucher for next year.

Day after the race - After all volunteers that want voucher get one, anyone else onsite is able to get a voucher.

Day after the race - Any available slots remaining are made available online.

One new trend, is that so many people seem to be claiming vouchers to keep their options open, that there is a second online offering made after the end of the 'signup window' for anyone holding vouchers.  More people take vouchers than actually sign up, so after the signup period closes, there are still slots available.  See the recent re-offering of slots online for Canada this year.

If you're in person, you will get a spot.  You will have to wait in a shorter line if you volunteer.  Not to mention you get a nifty shirt out of the deal.  If you wait for online, you may get a spot, but you have to be fast, as the online spots go very quickly.  If you miss the initial online, keep an eye open for the seconday offering, after the voucher holder deadline passes.

For IMMoo '09, if you have a voucher, the signup window is 15th to the 19th ( IE, now ).  So one week after the race.

It certainly was this year. The volunteer line was allowed in first to get vouchers on Monday. After all the volunteers were served, the non-volunteers were admitted. There was no advantage to being early in either line - all on-site wanna-signers were accommodated.  Judging by the short time the race was open on-line, that might be different for non-volunteers next year - the back of the line could be closed out.

There was also a lot of fuss over proving you were a volunteer. Volunteers were warned they wouldn't be allowed in the volunteer line unless they had checked in with captains appropriately on race day, still had their wristbands intact, and had their T-shirts. When it came down to it, anyone with a T-shirt made the volunteer line - perhaps enforcement will step up next year. There was a fair amount of T-short swapping going on late Sunday.

This week was the drop the money week - need to be in by Friday. So you get about two weeks after the race to pay up. The voucher, however, is a "contract" to sign up.  You're obligated.

I'll quote you the exact words tonight if you'd like. (It's at home, I'm at work.) Whether they'd chase you or not is a different question - but it's a contract.

The Ironman Wisconsin website has a link to the organization handling the volunteering management activities, including sign-up. As previously posted, this info will not be updated for quite a while yet...

550.00 for a race entry fee???

If your sponsored do you still have to pay that?

Depends who your sponsor is and what they will pay for.  Somebody is picking up the tab though.
