Subject: Base Training Workouts
Hello all,

I am looking to do things the right way this year and am hoping to some ideas for base 1, 2, 3 period workouts.

I am hoping to get some good endurance workouts other than LSD.

Looking for:
-1-2.5 bike workouts trainer or road.
-1-1.5 hour swim workouts; and
-45min-2 run workouts

All help is appreciated

There's no one 'right' answer for this.  Depends on your current fitness level, your goals, any injuries, etc...

For example personally, one of my staple 'base' workouts on the bike is 60-90 minutes on the trainer with a main set of 2 x 20' at threshold.  I would also have threshold work in swimming (rarely do LSD there) and running.  Right for you?  Maybe.

I am actually coming off a year lay off from back surgery.

I average about 5m10s/km on runs
28km/hr on bike
1m40s/100m swim.

It was my understanding that to do base training there shouldn't be threshold work in there...maybe I am wrong though.

My current base training is a lot of easy efforts on the run and bike, just looking to break the monotony.

I personally think that your base should be made up of building and then maintaining volume at a relatively easy pace. Building a base i sall about consistancy. Now I am literally just starting ( as in 2 weeks ago) training for tri's so take my advice at your own peril. I have a pretty strong running backround and building a base for that consisted of building mileage. I would not do any interval/repeat type of stuff at all. I would throw in a tempo run once a week, but that would only be after about 10 weeks of base (lsd miles).

Good luck.

Coming back from a year long layoff, you may be right.  But it's not a 'rule' for everybody.
