Subject: How long to rest after sprint race

Any suggestions on how long to rest before resuming training after a sprint distance race (my race was on Saturday)? I only had 6 weeks to prepare for this tri, so I pushed myself pretty hard while I was training. After my first figure competition, my trainer had me take a week off just to rest and recoup, but don't know if that's needed here.

A couple of days or maybe 3 should be fine. Just listen to your body. Some people will use races as training days, just depends on how hard you feel you pushed it and how your are feeling in general with tightness/soreness in joints/muscles.

Different people will recover differently and for different reasons. If it was your first one or last one for the season, take a week to pat yourself on the back and feel good about your accomplishment, do some R&R stuff, grab a massage. If you're gonna try and squeeze another race in before the end of the season then I'd probably ease back into training over the next day or two. IMO

BTW Congrats on your race.

Just about everything I've been reading has agreed to 1 day of rest per hour of race for "A" races. If that race was the one you were training up for, then give yourself a day or two and then jump right back into the fray

Not disputing what you read, I have just never seen it. I would say let your body decide. It also depends on hard you raced and what your fitness was going into the race. Give it a day off, maybe hit up some easy upper body weights or some easy swimming two days out. Day 3 a light recovery spin, day 4 easy jog. Some people will recover easier by reintroducing activities earlier on. Some will not.

Just listen to your body. You might be ready to get back to easy training within a day or two. If you try training and still feel fatigue or discomfort, stop or slow down. Swimming and riding are best to return to first, then running when you know you feel good.

Well, this was my first tri in 8 years, and I only had 6 weeks to train in swim and bike, since I had not done either in 8 years!  But...I won my age group! :-)

I have not had a rest week off since March, and have been training (weight lifting and running) 5 to 6 days a week, every week since then.  So...maybe I need a little more of a break?

Comments?

It sounds like you may be a little mentally fatigued as well after all the training?  If so, after a couple days off maybe consider doing something different than what you've been doing over the last 6 weeks to add a little variety to switch things up.

What is your body telling you? Do you have any other events coming up that you need to worry about?

Your body knows best - let it decide.  I've had some where I felt fine and others where the competition was really stiff that took me 3-4 days before I felt normalSmile again.

It's easier to start back with an easy swim or spin when you get the itch.
